Fans love The Bloodshots, a Winnipeg band fronted by Sagkeeng First Nation’s CJ Loane.
Right now, they’re No.1 on the Indigenous Music Countdown (IMC) — chosen by fans, paying homage to how The Bloodshots first came onto the music scene.
“That’s how we kind of got into the public eye, was a fan-voting contest,” said Loane in an interview with CityNews.
Now, to have a song shoot to No.1 on the IMC, is a milestone moment for the group.
“We’ve had songs on the IMC in the past and I think we’ve only ever gotten to the Top 10 once, and this song, I think it just, it really catches people,” he said.
“The fan voting, they said, was just over-the-top for us. We had leap-frogged to No. 1 from No. 4, I believe. They said it was all due to high fanfare. So we were pleasantly shocked.”

Loane says the band’s song that shot to No.1, called ‘Empty,’ came during a time of change for the group.
“The song is about realizing if a certain situation doesn’t suit you anymore, but you kind of get stuck in the groove, and being comfortable in that situation, just being brave and getting out of it. Looking at how good your life can be,” he said.
“We’ve heard things in the past like: ‘they get enough opportunities on the Indigenous front, they don’t need anymore.’ You know what I mean? So I think it’s kind of a double-edged sword, but you are who you are. We are who we are and that’s all there is to it.”

He stressed however the attention being given to Indigenous artists is positive for the music scene and the community.
“We’ve played with a lot of Indigenous artists over the years and it’s just something that’s getting more focus these days I feel like,” he said. “I think it’s good for the overall music scene.”

Manitoba RCMP say a 27-year-old man is dead following a rollover collision on Highway 12 Wednesday morning.
A Mountie who was driving on Highway 12 found the vehicle rolled over around 6:20 a.m.
After stopping to investigate the collision, a passerby informed the officer they saw someone attempting to remove a person from the vehicle before fleeing on foot.
Following that, the Mountie was able to find a 27-year-old man suffering from life-threatening injuries.
The man was taken to a hospital by STARS Air Ambulance, where he later died from his injuries.
With help from police dogs and a drone, Mounties were able to find a 31-year-old man who is believed to have been driving the vehicle. He was taken into custody a short distance away from the scene.
Mounties are asking if anyone has any information regarding the collision to contact Steinbach RCMP at 204-326-1234 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

The death of a man whose body was found this week in the area where Puvirnituq Snow Festival events are happening appears to have been accidental, police say.
Events were disrupted Wednesday morning by the discovery of the body, apparently by visitors who came to Puvirnituq for the five-day festival.
At the time, Nunavik police said all possibilities were being considered while their investigation was ongoing.
Sgt. Hugues Beaulieu, a spokesperson for Sûreté du Québec, said investigators from the provincial police force arrived in Puvirnituq Wednesday night after being called earlier in the day.
“It’s still under investigation, but it appears to be an accidental death,” he said in French by text Thursday morning.
The body was discovered in the same place where 200 ice sculptors and community members had gathered Monday for the start of the festival. By Thursday morning, the yellow police tape used to cordon off the area had been removed.
Snow festival events that were put on hold Wednesday resumed Thursday, including a dogsled race scheduled for 10 a.m.
The body found was that of a man in his 40s, Nunavik Police Service deputy Chief Jean-François Morin said. The man’s identity has not been released.
