Two relieved families were reunited with lost pets this weeks.
Skyler the golden retriever, who bolted during fireworks on New Year’s Eve was located yesterday morning in the area of Thorburn Road much to the relief of the Higdon family of Kenmount Terrace.
Meanwhile, Duke the setter, who had been missing for days, was also located yesterday. Sara Pelley-Ivany a member of Duke’s search party and a friend of the dog’s worried owners, says Duke decided to take a stroll after being let out to do his business, and never returned.
Pelley-Ivany says a medium was even brought in to help, but that’s not what led them to find the dog.
“He just decided to show up on (owner) Shelly’s doorstep.”

Edible cushioning for those fragile shipments….
You know those small pieces of Styrofoam that are used to protect the contents of a package from shifting or breaking during transport? Right: They’re sometimes called ‘popcorn’. Well, a Japanese company is now using literal popcorn for the job. Popcorn manufacturer and delicacy wholesaler Azechi Foods’ manager Shihoko Wada, had been struggling to promote popcorn on its online store where people mainly bought delicacies.
Then she was inspired by a laptop repair technician at a management seminar. He used cylindrical puffed corn snacks as a cushioning material. That sparked the revelation to Wada that not only could the popcorn be used as an actual snack after use, but it was also a great opportunity to attract attention to the company.
And that’s exactly what happened. Before long photos of the bags started going viral on Japanese social media, and the company soon started receiving orders from all sorts of businesses, leading to even more exposure via national TV outlets. Although the bags of popcorn packing material are more expensive than conventional cushioning materials, they can be eaten afterward, which helps eliminate waste, unlike other cushioning or filler materials, most of which end up in the trash. – from Oddity Central

Premier Andrew Furey is creating a new expert panel to provide advice to cabinet on Churchill Falls negotiations, and he says they are looking at ways for some of that information to be released publicly.
Furey announced on the first day of the MOU debate that the team will be established to advise cabinet as they work towards binding agreements. They will be separate from the negotiating committee.
All opposition parties are calling for a independent review of the MOU, and while Furey says the team will provide another level of oversight on the process, a criticism is that they only report to cabinet and not publicly.
Furey says the challenge with the situation is that there is commercially sensitive information that cannot be released, but they are looking at ways for advice from the team to be made public.
“One of the models that has existed in the past….has been Muskrat Falls oversight updates and things, where they weren’t really revealing commercially sensitive information but were providing fulsome updates and that is something we’re contemplating.”
That answer does not satisfy the wants of PC leader Tony Wakeham.
He says the MOU needs to go before an independent panel for review, and the PCs will not be voting for the agreement until that happens.
NDP Leader Jim Dinn has written a letter to the Premier asking for an independent review of the Churchill Falls MOU.
Dinn has given Furey two options for a review, which he says must be independent, and “perceived to be independent,” and report back to the House of Assembly and the public.
The first option is for the PUB to review the deal, and the second is to establish an independent expert oversight and review committee to do the same.

VIENNA (AP) — Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg will serve as the country’s interim leader while the far-right Freedom Party attempts to put together a new coalition government, the president’s office said Wednesday.
Schallenberg, 55, will take on the duties of outgoing Chancellor Karl Nehammer, who announced his resignation over the weekend after his efforts to put together a coalition without the Freedom Party collapsed. Nehammer plans to step down on Friday.
President Alexander Van der Bellen’s office said in a statement that the head of state will formally task Schallenberg with “continuing the management of the chancellery and leading the interim government.”
It will be Schallenberg’s second — and, again, likely brief — stint as Austria’s leader. Schallenberg served as chancellor for less than two months in late 2021 after Sebastian Kurz resigned, before passing the job to Nehammer and returning to the Foreign Ministry.
The anti-immigration, euroskeptic and Russia-friendly Freedom Party won Austria’s parliamentary election in September, but was initially shunned by other parties.
After Nehammer announced his resignation, his conservative Austrian People’s Party made an abrupt U-turn on its previous refusal to contemplate working with the Freedom Party under its leader, Herbert Kickl.
On Monday, Kickl received a mandate to try to form what would be the first national government led by the far right since World War II. That’s a process that could take weeks or months, and isn’t guaranteed to succeed.
Schallenberg has said he wouldn’t stay in the government under Kickl.
