All firefighters on duty were dispatched to a residential fire on the city’s north side Thursday afternoon, the Fredericton Fire Department reports, and one resident was injured in the blaze.

The fire department issued a statement on social media Thursday evening about a major call at 2:43 p.m. the same day.

“All city crews were dispatched to a structure fire on the city’s north side, with reports of multiple compressed gas cylinders inside,” it said.

“Engine 4 arrived on scene first and stretched a hose line for primary search and fire control.”

Subsequent crews worked to assist with fighting the fire and ensuring the water supply, it said.

“The incident was brought under control a few hours later, with one resident transported to hospital by [Ambulance New Brunswick] with non-life-threatening injuries,” the department reported.

“Unfortunately, despite life-saving measures by firefighters, one pet did not survive.”

Assistant deputy fire chief Dave McKinley told the Fredericton Independent that the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Province Reminds Motorists to Exercise Caution as Heavy Snowfall Expected to Affect Road Conditions Over Next Two Days

Motorists are reminded to adjust their driving for winter road conditions and to heed highway closures and travel warnings as snowfall with reduced visibility and localized blowing snow begins this afternoon and ends overnight Friday.

Heavy and rapidly accumulating snowfall is expected in parts of western and southcentral Manitoba, affecting areas from east of Brandon to Winnipeg, and north of Steinbach.

Motorists should exercise caution as travel conditions will deteriorate starting tonight and will remain poor throughout the day Friday. Visibility will be significantly reduced due to heavy snowfall and localized blowing snow with a total accumulation of 20 to 30 centimetres of fresh snow expected in portions of southern Manitoba by Friday evening.

Motorists should not attempt to pass a snowplow at any time while it is in operation and should slow down when passing approaching snowplows. All equipment operates with flashing blue warning lights and drivers should stay well back of snow removal crews.

Travellers should always check Manitoba 511 https://www.manitoba511.ca/en/ for current road conditions prior to making the decision to travel. 511 is updated regularly by road patrols, but conditions can change in a matter of minutes. Up-to-date information about provincial snowplow work is also available on the Manitoba 511 website and app.
