They have been trying to stop him from scoring goals for twenty years and still cannot figure it out. Records are made to be broken but it seems that Alex Ovechkin’s goal-scoring record will stand for a long, long time.
Ovechkin scored in the second period to overtake Wayne Gretzky’s record of 894 goals.
Gretzky noted in his speech at the game on Long Island Sunday afternoon that when he broke Gordie Howe’s record, they gave him a Rolls Royce.
Ovechkin began his speech this way “What a day, huh”
One of the more incredible elements of his career is that the Russian winger has had 14 seasons with 40 or more goals and this year, despite missing five weeks with a broken leg, is third in the NHL in goal scoring.

Four groups supporting women who are victims of violence joined forces on Sunday to call for amendments to Bill 91, which would create a Unified Family Court within the Court of Quebec and require family mediation in the event of the separation of a couple with a child.
“In its current form, this bill raises serious concerns for women victims of domestic violence and their children,” warned Marie-Pier Riendeau, acting director general of the Fédération des associations des familles monoparentales et recomposées du Québec, at a joint press conference.
The groups fear that the situation of these women will worsen if the law is adopted without amendment.
Although the law provides an exemption for anyone claiming to be a victim, “many do not recognise themselves as victims, or fear reprisals if they ask to be exempted,” explained Manon Monatesse, Executive Director of the Fédération des maisons d’hébergement pour femmes.
Sabrina Lemeltier, the group’s administrator, notes that nearly half of the women sheltered in the past year by the Alliance des maisons d’hébergement de 2e étape pour femmes et enfants victims of post-separation domestic violence did not file a complaint.
To improve the situation, the organisations are calling, among other things, for systematic screening for domestic violence at the first stage of the legal process. At present, the law does not require any investigation into the control that one member of a couple exercises over the other. However, mediators are required to undergo basic training on violence.
“When victims end up in mediation, many of them end up bargaining by giving up their rights to sole custody of the child – for fear that the child will also be abused,” says Louise Rindeau, co-responsible for political issues at the Regroupement des maisons pour femmes victimes de violence conjugale.
“There’s nothing free, voluntary, informed or egalitarian about the state in which she arrives at mediation. When she sits down next to her partner, there’s an imbalance of power, and that’s what domestic violence leads to, that’s the objective of domestic violence,” she continues.

Winnipeg police say a stabbing that hospitalized a woman led to two people wanted on warrants being taken into custody.
WPS says around 3:30 a.m. on Apr. 6, officers responded to a report of a fight at a home near Alexander Avenue and Gunnell Street.
When officers arrived at the home, they found a 25-year-old woman suffering from multiple stabbing injuries.
Officers say they provided medical care before paramedics arrived and took the woman to a hospital in unstable condition. She was later upgraded to stable.
Police note that any suspects at the scene fled before the officers arrived.
However, WPS say a 42-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man were “arrested on the strength of warrants, however, no arrests were made in relation to the stabbing incident.”
Anyone who might have any information regarding the incident is asked to contact investigators at 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477.

Students at Killarney's Christian School are taking to the stage later this month to bring new life to a favorite swashbuckling adventure comedy filmed in 1987, The Princess Bride.
Drama teacher, Dan Friesen, says their rendition is titled, The Princess Cried, showcasing the strife between two communities, set in the days of yore, and all the fun that comes with that!
"I've taught drama here for three years, and this is our third year," shares Friesen. "Building on the foundational skills we've learned about stage presence, voice projection, and our experiences with Christmas pageants, we decided to plunge into the deep end and rewrite The Princess Bride. We've added some local touches, such as Killarney versus Ninette and instead of the Gilder conflict, and dread Phys-Ed teacher instead of a dread pirate robber."
The Princess Cried was written together as a drama class to which Friesen edited the script to make it stage ready.
"Our students, aged 10 and 12, are playing the roles in our show," he adds. "We've kept the swordplay and included funny rhyming bits. We're having lots of fun with it and looking forward to performing it. It's been a lot of fun, and it's a fairly small class with 11 students."
"It's been great for bonding, especially since many of these students have been together for the past two years," explains Friesen. "We've been able to work together on this project and even write our own pieces. And some of the characters reflect the students' personalities. It's been a creative and enjoyable experience!"
The Princess Cried will be performed at two locations:
Boissevain Theatre:
- April 22 at Boissevain- Morton Community Theatre at 7pm
Killarney Shamrock Centre Dinner Theatre:
- The dinner theatre at the Shamrock Centre in Killarney on April 27 at 5pm
Tickets for both are available at the Lakeside Christian School phone: 204-523-8240

Public engagement will be put to the test if Hamilton Council goes along with a staff recommendation to get input on a possible widening of the Red Hill Valley Parkway-Linc system. A report commissioned by Public Works outlines the technical as well as environmental considerations that such a widening would entail. The two parkways were designed to accommodate expansion by one lane in each direction, placing the additional lanes inward into the centre median as opposed to expanding outwards. A consultant report says going into the median will minimize effects on animal habitat and vegetation.

The proposal is being considered because traffic volume on the network has exceeded design capacity in rush hours. Both highways are average close to 90,000 vehicles a day. There are roughly 7,500 trucks a day on the highways working out to about 5 truck movements every minute, but undoubtedly higher during daylight hours when there is more truck traffic. The widening would also necessitate some changes to existing interchanges where traffic weaving is a safety issue—these include the Mohawk Road interchange on the Linc and the northbound section of the Red Hill Parkway between Mud Street and Greenhill.
Staff have spent $485,000 of $600,000 that was allocated for a feasibility study, and propose to use the remaining $115,000 to conduct a stakeholder engagement exercise. Because the Red Hill runs through sensitive natural areas, any major works there require additional approval by the Red Hill Valley Joint Stewardship Board. That Board was established as part of the agreement with First Nations to allow the Red Hill to proceed, consisting of members of Hamilton Council and First Nations representatives, but which has become dysfunctional since two council members, Clark and Francis quit the board last fall. The only councillor still on the Board is Tammy Hwang who has called for a staff review of the board. n November 2022, a proposal was made to the Red Hill Valley Joint Stewardship Board and to date remains under consideration. In December 2023, Council considered a motion to request the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) to Upload the Red Hill Valley Parkway and Lincoln Alexander Parkway to become as a Provincial Highway.
Staff estimate the cost of addition the additional lanes would be $135 Million, which would include installation of storm sewers. The staff report is going before Public Works Committee this week.

Three men are being charged after a fight led to two of them getting stabbed in downtown Winnipeg Friday afternoon, police say.
WPS says around 3:15 p.m. on Apr. 4, officers responded to reports of multiple stabbings along Ellice Avenue near The Promenade.
When officers arrived, they found a 30-year-old man near Vaughaun Street and The Promenade suffering from upper-body stab wounds. Officers provided medical care before paramedics could arrive.
A 19-year-old man was also found near Qu’Appelle Avenue and Kennedy Street suffering from an upper-body stabbing injury.
While both men were taken to a hospital by paramedics, they were in stable condition.
Through an investigation, police learned that both men were part of two different groups that got into a verbal altercation, which escalated and led to the stabbings.
The 19-year-old and the 30-year-old are both facing charges of aggravated assault and possession of a weapon.
Police add that a 25-year-old man is also facing a charge of possession of a weapon.
All three have since been released on an undertaking.
