DENVER (AP) — A federal agency killed a collared wolf that appears to have crossed from Colorado into Wyoming and killed several sheep, government officials said Thursday.
The wolf was part of a voter-driven reintroduction of the predators in Colorado, a move that angered ranchers who feared losing livestock and agitated political divisions between urban and rural communities. The animals are protected in Colorado, but in large parts of Wyoming it’s legal to kill them.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Services responded to reports of a predator killing five sheep in north-central Wyoming on Saturday. The agency found evidence pointing to a wolf attack, including bite marks and tracks, according to spokesperson Tanya Espinosa.
Later that day, the agency killed the wolf it believed was the culprit and discovered it had a collar from Colorado Parks and Wildlife, Espinosa said. The wolf and collar were returned to the Colorado agency.
That agency said in a press release that a collar on a male gray wolf alerted the animal’s death on Sunday in the same region of Wyoming. “Wolves are known to travel long distances to find food or mates, including into other states,” read the agency’s statement.
The agency said the wolf had been transported from Canada, part of Colorado’s ongoing reintroduction efforts after the first wolf paws touched down in December 2023.

Pierre Poilievre’s fear of media scrutiny is yet more proof that he’s unfit to be prime minister
The Conservatives’ move to bar the media from travelling with Pierre Poilievre’s election campaign is 100% on-brand. They’re breaking with decades of tradition on the part of all major political parties in Canada, not just because they’ve adopted Trump’s anti-media stance — hardly surprising given that Poilievre’s campaign manager Jenni Byrne has been known to wear a MAGA hat — but because what the CPC is offering Canadians doesn’t hold up to any scrutiny whatsoever.
With an election coming, and their numbers tanking, the Conservatives simply can’t afford to risk more Canadians discovering the truth: that their candidate is a weak Trumpist with no ideas who floated to the top of their ranks on the strength of misinformation and endorsements from fascists and alt-right influencers.
For over two years, Poilievre has been running on cheap slogans and dubious alliances. Kicking the media off the campaign trail reveals that all his team can bring themselves to do right now is release packaged soundbites and hold Trump-style rallies in front of the CPC’s maple-MAGA base.

A Burton man scheduled to go through a bail hearing Thursday asked a court instead to postpone the proceeding so he could better prepare a proposal for his release.
Brady Matthew Worden, 30, of Route 102, appeared in Fredericton provincial court by video conference Thursday from a custodial facility, scheduled for a show-cause hearing - more commonly known as a bail hearing.

He faces two sets of charges, both laid by the New Brunswick RCMP’s internet child exploitation unit.
The first file alleges he possessed child pornography in Fredericton and breached an October 2016 court order prohibiting him from accessing the internet, both between June 24 and Sept. 24; and that he transmitted child porn Sept. 6, all in Fredericton.
He was free on conditions on those charges until late last week, when he was detained on new charges.

Unions, opposition, pan healthcare spending in budget

The provincial budget, released Wednesday, is being criticized for what is included in terms of healthcare, with unions and the opposition NDP stating it doesn’t include enough for the retention of staff, and it is spending even less money in some areas than the last budget.
Linda Renkas is the vice president of CUPE 5430. She said the numbers don’t track with what they were hearing before the budget was presented.
“We didn’t see anything for retention of workers,” Renkas said in the rotunda of the Legislature Wednesday afternoon. “Our workers haven’t received a fair wage increase for too long. We’re without a collective agreement for two years already, and we’re in bargaining.
Renkas noted the budget didn’t include anything for retention of the employees her union represents, while there was an increase in infrastructure, recruitment efforts for doctors, and more seats open at the University of Saskatchewan for aspiring doctors.
The situation in rural parts of the province, such as southeast Saskatchewan, was also of importance for Renkas.
“The government needs to invest in recruiting people to that rural (area), and perhaps incentivizing workers to stay in rural (areas).”
Vicky Mowat is the shadow minister of health for the NDP. She emphasized the importance of rural healthcare as well, stating they will be watching programs such as the expansion of the virtual physician program, which is used in four communities in the southeast.
“If we can improve access to health care, that’s going to be a good thing, but iPads can’t replace the real thing,” Mowat said after the budget speech. “So, we want to make sure that we are also working to train, recruit, and retain doctors. Right now, we only retain about 38 per cent of our family doctors in family medicine and specialists that we train in this province. Thirty-eight per cent is not good enough. It’s not high enough. We need to be working on keeping those positions around, providing a good quality of life for those people so that they stick around, and are able to provide the services that Saskatchewan people need when and where they need it.”
The budget estimates for the 2025-26 fiscal year have a $28 million decline, or 3.7 per cent, from the previous fiscal year. There are also declines in the allocations for Saskatchewan Health Authority targeted programs and services, and provincial targets programs and services. The overall budget for health, however, is up from $7.59 billion in 2024-25, to $8.07 billion in 2025-26.
