Sherbrooke’s NGC Aerospace’s pivotal role in PROBA-3 satellite mission

By William Crooks

Local Journalism Initiative

In the quiet but technologically vibrant city of Sherbrooke, NGC Aerospace stands as a beacon of Canadian ingenuity. Founded in 2001 by Jean de Lafontaine, this cutting-edge firm specializes in autonomous software for satellites, a contribution that has not only revolutionized space operations but also cemented Canada’s presence in the aerospace sector. Most recently, NGC played a key role in the European Space Agency’s (ESA) ambitious PROBA-3 mission, a two-satellite system designed to study the Sun’s mysterious corona.

Turning vision into reality

Jean de Lafontaine, NGC’s founder and CEO, traces the company’s trajectory from humble beginnings to its current stature as a world-class innovator. “Our software reduces operational costs by automating satellite functions,” he explained in a Dec. 9 interview. Instead of requiring extensive ground-based teams, NGC’s systems use onboard intelligence to ensure precision and autonomy. This capability is crucial for missions like PROBA-3, where millimeter-accurate positioning and millidegree orientation are non-negotiable.

Located in Sherbrooke’s techno park, NGC has grown from a solo venture to a team of highly skilled engineers. De Lafontaine credits his dual role as a professor at the Université de Sherbrooke for enabling the recruitment of top talent, many of whom were once his students. The company’s ability to foster long-term careers is evident: some of its earliest hires, who joined two decades ago, remain at the core of the team.

NGC’s expertise lies in what it calls “software intelligence,” a deterministic system that ensures satellites operate predictably and reliably. Unlike general artificial intelligence, which can produce unpredictable results, NGC’s software guarantees stability and consistency—qualities critical for space missions where even minor errors can jeopardize millions of dollars of equipment.

A mission to illuminate the Sun

The PROBA-3 mission, launched on Dec. 5, represents a milestone in solar research. By orchestrating artificial eclipses every 20 hours, the two satellites—a coronagraph and an occulter—allow scientists to observe the solar corona for extended periods. This layer of the Sun’s atmosphere, known for its enigmatic solar flares and eruptions, plays a critical role in phenomena like space weather, which can disrupt Earth’s communication networks and power grids.

“Solar flares caused Quebec’s 1989 blackout,” de Lafontaine pointed out. “Understanding the corona could help predict such events.” With NGC’s software autonomously controlling the satellites to within millidegree orientation and millimeter positioning, PROBA-3 delivers unprecedented precision in solar observations. The eclipses created by the two satellites will last up to six hours, providing scientists with an unparalleled opportunity to study the corona’s role in solar storms.

These advancements are not only scientific but also technological. The PROBA-3 mission is a first-of-its-kind demonstration of high-precision formation flying. The two satellites must maintain a separation of 150 metres with millimeter accuracy, exchanging information in real time to achieve their delicate alignment. Any deviation risks exposing the coronagraph to direct sunlight, negating the eclipse and disrupting data collection.

By William Crooks

Local Journalism Initiative

The Université de Sherbrooke (UdeS) has reaffirmed its standing as a research powerhouse, securing the 11th position in the latest rankings of Canada’s Top 50 Research Universities. With a research revenue of $240.3 million in 2022-23, UdeS is a shining example of how strategic partnerships, interdisciplinary collaboration, and efficient resource-sharing can drive excellence in research and innovation.

“This achievement reflects the dedication of our entire research community,” said Jean-Pierre Perreault, Vice-President, Research and Graduate Studies at UdeS, in a recent interview. “Our progress has been remarkable, with research revenues increasing more than 100 per cent over the past few years. In 2017, we generated $130 million; today, we’re at $240 million, and we project $285 million for next year.”

A legacy of growth and innovation

The steady rise in research revenues over the past decade underscores UdeS’s commitment to excellence. In just a few years, the university has not only doubled its funding but also maintained its momentum despite competition from institutions in larger urban centres such as Montreal and Toronto.

“What sets us apart is our strong culture of partnerships and our focus on aligning research with societal needs,” Perreault explained. This approach has enabled UdeS to secure significant grants and contracts from diverse funding sources, including government agencies, private organizations, and non-profits.

UdeS’s ability to innovate and collaborate has also been recognized nationally. For instance, the university has been the top institution in Canada for research revenue growth four times in recent years, a feat Perreault attributes to its interdisciplinary approach and unique structure.

From small city to research leader

Despite being located in Sherbrooke, a smaller city in the Eastern Townships, UdeS consistently competes with—and often outperforms—universities in Canada’s major metropolitan areas. Perreault noted that this success stems from the university’s integration into its local and regional communities.

“We conduct over 20,000 interviews and engage in 6,000 co-op training sessions annually,” he said. “This interaction helps us understand societal needs and translates into more significant grant success.”

UdeS’s interdisciplinary model has been another key factor. By encouraging collaboration across fields such as quantum science, climate research, and healthcare, the university has created an environment where innovative solutions to complex problems flourish. This strategy is supported by six areas of excellence, 19 research centres, and 105 research chairs, including two Canada Excellence Research Chairs.

Perreault highlighted how breaking down traditional academic silos has led to groundbreaking advances. “Our structure encourages collaboration, whether it’s between researchers or with external partners,” he said. “This model not only advances knowledge but also creates a dynamic environment for students.”

You know awards season is well underway when the Golden Globes nominations are announced. Among this morning’s announcements are multiple noms for Emilia Pérez, The Brutalist, Conclave, Anora and Wicked, suggesting that these titles might be favourites for Best Picture at the Oscars (a category that doesn’t have any obvious frontrunner this year).

After being revived and rebranded for the 2023–24 awards season, with an expanded voting body and a continued commitment against corruption, the Golden Globes has introduced some more left-field choices into the conversation, including The Substance and Challengers — audience and box-office favourites that have had negligible awards attention thus far.

For local legend Denis Villeneuve, Dune: Part Two only snagged two nominations: Best Motion Picture – Drama and Hans Zimmer for his soundtrack (a surprise after he was said to be disqualified in this category by most awards shows this year). Villeneuve will always be a winner in our hearts. Meanwhile, Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya were nominated for roles in other films (A Complete Unknown and Challengers, respectively).

On the topic of “snubs,” Anthony Jeselnik’s Bones and All not securing a nomination in the stand-up category is egregious, but also predictable. The best films of the year that didn’t receive attention are small, independent and foreign; they likely weren’t even on the voters’ radar. It has yet to screen for critics in Montreal, but the lack of any Golden Globes nominations for Barry Jenkins Mufasa: The Lion King also raises some eyebrows. Though it possibly only qualified for last year (it didn’t receive any nominations either), the biggest miss of the past year (or two) has to be Nathan Fielder’s The Curse, one of the best works of screen art of the past decade.

The inclusion of the meant-to-be-audience-pleasing Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category continues to be an embarrassment. The category is used as an excuse to list a few high-earning films that otherwise are undeserving of serious awards attention. Ignoring the fact that the category more appropriately should be understood as a way of rewarding gigantic marketing budgets, it would have been better suited to go niche, highlighting films like The Substance or Challengers that were made on a smaller budget but garnered not only unexpected box-office results but were memed to oblivion.

The obvious pandering of the existence of the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement also discounts that the Golden Globes, in also awarding television, already rewards enormously popular screen culture. Sure, the average Canadian maybe hasn’t seen Anora or All We Imagine as Light, but many have watched The Bear, Abbott Elementary and House of the Dragon. Why are we pretending that the problem with awards shows is the quality and popularity of the nominations and not the culture itself? Awards shows don’t resonate the way they used to, and it remains to be seen whether their maintenance (and, in this case, revival) are worthwhile.

The 82nd Golden Globes ceremony will air on CBS and Paramount+ on Jan. 5, 2025, 8 p.m., with host Nikki Glaser.

How Montreal’s Cultural Diversity Mirrors the Forex Market’s Complexity

Known for its mix of cultureslanguages and traditions, it’s a picture of how people from different backgrounds can come together and create something amazing.

This diversity isn’t just about food and festivals; it’s a web of complexity that mirrors something much bigger: the structure and behavior of global systems, like the forex market.

Understanding how these two seemingly unrelated things connect can give us a new perspective on both.

Let’s get into what makes Montreal’s diversity so cool and how it reflects the complexity of a forex system.

A Melting Pot

Montreal has people from over 120 different ethnicities.

Walking around the city you’ll hear FrenchEnglishArabicMandarin and many more languages.

You can find neighborhoods where you can eat food from 5 continents on the same street.

This multiculturalism didn’t happen overnight.

Montreal’s history is one of immigration waves, from French settlers in the 17th century to modern day immigrants from Asia, Africa and Latin America.

This mix of cultures makes Montreal feel like a mini world.

Just like the forex market and comprehensive trading tutorials where currencies from all over the world interact, Montreal thrives on connections.

The success of cultural integration is all about balancing differences while fostering collaboration.

Cultural Diversity and the Forex Market Have This In Common

Montreal’s cultural landscape and the forex market have one thing in common: complexity driven by global interaction and constant change.

Both are dynamic, require adaptability and a deep understanding of what drives change.

Let’s dive into the similarities that make Montreal’s diversity and the forex market connected in unexpected ways.

Globalization

Both Montreal and the forex market need global participation.

Montreal is a cultural hub because of its immigrant communities, which bring languages, food and traditions.

Without this global input the city would lose much of its charm and energy.

The forex market is a global network of people exchanging currencies from almost every country in the world.

Whether it’s the US dollar, the euro or the Japanese yen, the forex market wouldn’t exist without this global interaction.

Both systems show us how diverse inputs are necessary for growth and sustainability.

Change

Change is at the core of both Montreal’s culture and the forex market.

In Montreal, immigration patterns are constantly reshaping neighborhoods, adding new flavors and influences to the city’s cultural identity.

For example, the influx of Asian and African immigrants in the last 2 decades has brought festivals, businesses and traditions that didn’t exist a generation ago.

In the forex market change is everywhere. Exchange rates move daily due to economic policies, political events and global trade agreements.

Just as Montreal adapts to changing demographics, traders and businesses must adapt to the changing currency landscape.

Adaptability

Adaptability is what keeps the city’s diverse population in harmony.

Residents learn to navigate cultural differences by attending multicultural events, learning new languages or building inclusive communities.

Adaptability is what unites a city so diverse.

The forex market requires adaptability. Success is about understanding how global events (electionseconomic shifts etc) impact currency values.

Just as Montrealers adapt to changes in their neighbourhoods, traders and analysts must adapt fast to stay ahead in the forex market.

Flexibility and openness to change is key to success in both.

Challenges in Both Systems

Of course, neither Montreal’s diversity nor the forex market is perfect. Both have challenges that need to be addressed.

● Inclusion Issues:
Montreal has faced criticism for unequal opportunities for some immigrant groups, just as smaller currencies can’t compete with bigger ones in the forex market.

● External Factors:
Both are exposed to external forces. For Montreal, it’s economic downturns that reduce immigration. For the forex market, it’s political instability in one region that can impact the whole world.

Solutions

The answer to these challenges is resilience. Montreal integrates immigrants better and global systems manage instability.

Montreal’s Festivals: A Cultural Exchange

Montreal has over 100 festivals a year, from the famous Jazz Festival to smaller ones for CaribbeanGreek or Indian culture.

These are like forex transactions in a way – there’s an exchange of ideas, traditions and values.

Fact: The Montreal International Jazz Festival is one of the largest gatherings of people in the genre and the cultural event brings over 2 million visitors every year.

This is what diversity can be when promoted.

Conclusion

Montreal and the forex market might seem like two completely different topics but they share one common truth: complexity breeds growth.

The multicultural nature of the city is evidence of global integration of the market to provide the message to individuals that harmonizing diversity results to creativity and prospects.

Say what you want about the joys of complexity; it’s not always fun to work within it.

Justin Libischer implies that Montreal, just like the forex market, needs work, knowledge and flexibility.

But when done right it can create something like this – the world in which cooperating and inclusion have no bounds.

Yoo Doo Right, From the Heights of Our Pastureland (Mothland)

Though the Montreal post-krautrock three-piece Yoo Doo Right does offer many similar, sprawling soundscapes across their repertoire, there’s always some strange, malignant force that keeps me glued — as if my attention is being held like Alex’s eyes in A Clockwork Orange as he’s forced to watch scenes of ultraviolence. Much of Yoo Doo Right’s work is all about the thematic build, and that’s never been as evident as on their new, third album.

During the track “Spirit’s Heavy, But Not Overthrown, Part 2,” it’s almost like waiting for the drop during a DJ set. The anticipation evolves over minutes until Justin Cober, the band’s guitarist/vocalist/synth player, gives a rare vocal mantra and we’re subject to one of the heaviest, distorted outros in the band’s career. The drums absolutely batter your eardrums under a thick blanket of bass guitar and whirring synth/guitar work in the follow-up track, “Eager Glacier,” giving way to another euphoric crescendo of sonorous propulsion.

The intro to “Ponders End,” with its darkened instrumental surf appeal, might be the newest sound for the Yoo Doo Right boys, but it slowly descends into the kind of madness that feels like watching a storm decimate an abandoned barn. The synth-led “Lost in the Overcast” is a lethargic and reverb-heavy reprieve until the finale, the album’s title track, plunges us back into the chaos. Yoo Doo Right has crushed it, again. 10/10 Trial Track “Spirit’s Heavy, But Not Overthrown, Part 2”

VICTIME, En conversation avec (Mothland)

Just when I thought I’d heard the weirdest offerings from Montreal’s Mothland label, VICTIME, a noise rock/no wave band that has been dormant for half a decade, dropped their second album. I don’t really understand what’s going on in songs like “Un beau spectacle” or “M.A.,” but I know I want more, and I’m not sure why. This album has an alluring experimental quality to it, with wispy vocals à la Björk, frenetic guitar and bass lines, cut-up trip hop drumming and buzzing, out-of-sync synthesizers and pedals. A song like “Collage” is immediately unsettling, creating an atmosphere of paranoia and disarray. It’s in the same wheelhouse as Kee Avil, another Montreal songwriter whose weird work is reserved for a certain kind of music listener. I don’t feel good, but that’s purposeful. So if you want some of that, look no further than En conversation avec. 7/10  Trial Track “Collage”

The City of Montreal is moving forward with the construction of modular housing units for the homeless as part of the forthcoming Namur-Hippodrome district in Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce and at Louvain-West in Ahuntsic-Cartierville. The two buildings, which will temporarily house a total of 60 people as they await more permanent housing solutions, is expected to be completed by the spring. The developments themselves are temporary, and will “give way to residential projects, including off-market housing.”

Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante described these innovative modular developments as “unprecedented efforts” on the part of the city to provide a “dignified and safe” housing solution for the homeless. Plante also noted that the issue of homelessness represents a “collective failure” and that the province needs to step in to ensure people’s safety this winter.

“The vulnerability crisis affecting Montreal and all of Quebec is a collective failure that requires leadership at all levels. In the short term, a plan from the Quebec government remains essential to quickly deploy additional measures dedicated to mental health and addiction care, offer more emergency shelter spaces and accelerate social housing units. Our administration will not give up and we are reaching out to the government and all our partners to ensure that everyone is warm during the winter.”

When a call for tenders was put out for this pilot project in August, the city’s executive committee member responsible for the homelessness file, Robert Beaudry, told La Presse that each building would feature common areas as well as 30 separate rooms with toilets and showers. He added that a community organization (TBD) would be present to assist residents in need of specialized services.
