A study by the Canadian Digital Media Research Network has found that 1 in 5 Canadians (18%) say they trust Jordan Peterson’s opinions on Canadian politics. This is similar to the proportion of Canadians who say the same for Elon Musk (19%) and Joe Rogan (18%).

Conversely, 40% of Canadians ascribe “low trust” to the opinions of Jordan Peterson — the psychologist, author and media commentator — regarding Canadian politics.

“When it comes to trust in their opinions on Canadian politics, this figure also shows that Barack Obama has the largest proportion of Canadians that give high trust (65%), whereas Elon Musk has the largest share of Canadians that give him low trust (75%).”

Matthew Rankin won my heart back in 2019 with his deranged feature-length heritage minute on William Lyon Mackenzie King, The Twentieth Century. His follow-up, Universal Language, is an all-together different beast. Part laugh out loud comedy, part homage to Iranian melodrama, the film re-imagines an alternate Canada where the two solitudes are French and Farsi. Set between Montreal and Winnipeg, the film is an incisive look at childhood, grief and communication against an improbably beautiful sterile background. Rankin’s camera transforms the institutional modernist architecture of Canadian cities into something minimalist and grandiose; reimagining Canada as a kind of mythic civilization of harsh edges softened by billowing snow.

Universal Language brims with imagination, embodying a kind of artisanal spirit. It reimagines Tim Hortons as a Persian tea lounge, Quebec ministry as prison-like offices adorned by Papa François Legault and Winnipeg as an unusual tourist destination. As the film progresses, though, its pure comic spirit gives way to something more personal. Rankin plays Matthew, a man on a pilgrimage back home to reunite with his mother. While much of the film is focused on the troublemaker (mis)adventures of elementary school-aged students, the film comes to fruition in this second part, as Matthew’s life intersects with the hometown he left many moons ago. The movie becomes a poetic investigation of grief, compassion and sacrifice. The imaginative touches of magical realism no longer serve just the film’s comedy, but a deeper sense of both alienation and reconciliation. In a festival that showcases the very best of world cinema, Matthew Rankin made my favourite film I saw at Cannes 2024 — a rare film that is completely visionary, funny, touching and life-affirming. The Cannes audience seemed to share my feelings, too, as it won the inaugural audience prize for the Director’s Fortnight. ■

Late last year, I was sitting in a screening of La Dolce Vita at the Cinémathèque Québécoise. It was a film I fell in love with as a young person discovering film in high school. Seeing it for the first time on the big screen, though, was like seeing it with new eyes. Watching Marcello Rubini (Marcello Mastroianni) wander through the streets of Rome in search of stories and meaning felt modern. It was a movie that, despite premiering 65 years ago, spoke to a sense of restlessness that felt endemic to my experience. The film was thrilling for its sense of romance and excitement, but also for the dull numbing feeling of meaninglessness. The whiplash between these fire-charged feelings — vitality and ennui — was intoxicating.

In many ways, 2024 was a life-changing year at the movies for me. For the first time since the pandemic, the frost of isolation and alienation began to melt. Life came into focus and with it, my love of cinema suddenly felt real and important again. It wasn’t merely a hunger, but a kind of lust; not a need to consume but a desire to explore. This meant discovering new filmmakers but also going back and revisiting old favourites. It felt like seeing again for the first time in a long time.

Some people in the Cult MTL comment section will be surprised to learn that I’m a lover, not a hater. Just because I’m unimpressed by movies like Deadpool vs. Wolverine or apprehensive about Anora’s politics, doesn’t mean I’m not deeply, passionately invested in cinema. My tastes are my own and I’m unapologetic about the fact that I prefer films that are intimate and new. I prefer small films about people looking at each other; I prefer new images that imagine new ways of experiencing the world.

Afternoons of Solitude best films 2024
Afternoons of Solitude (The best films of 2024, a life-changing year at the movies)

My favourite film of the year, Afternoons of Solitude, captures that sense of newness. The film is a documentary about bullfighting but is unlike anything I’ve seen before. Director Albert Serra’s exhaustive style and preference for digital and new technologies means that the film has an unparalleled intimacy. Bringing us directly into the ring, with its spectacular and fascistic violence, the movie invokes a closeness to power and machismo that would be otherwise inaccessible. It’s a film that captures a feeling very rarely seen in contemporary cinema anymore: that art isn’t separate from life, but intertwined with it. It’s transformative for both the subject and filmmaker, as well as the audience.

Many films on my list tackle this idea in different forms, by blurring the line between fiction and documentary, embracing spontaneity or improvisation in style and challenging reality itself. A movie like Festin Boréal, about a moose rotting in the Quebec boreal forest, attempts to draw us back to earth, exploring the realm of a natural world that we’ve turned our back on. Another homegrown film, Universal Language (set for wide release in Quebec on Jan. 31), reimagines Canada’s two solitudes as French and Farsi. That reimagining of Canada’s linguistic and cultural divide reaches towards a deeper truth than a purely realist approach could find. It’s a movie borne out of deep imagination and consideration for the relationship between art, culture and people.

In a time of increased uncertainty and cynicism, art shouldn’t be treated merely as a form of escape, but an opportunity to see and engage with the world in new ways. Watching challenging or different types of films can be a transformative experience if you allow yourself to be taken down roads that may seem unfamiliar. If you open up your heart and mind, you might surprise yourself at the new experiences available to you.

Few of this year’s awards contenders were of particular interest to me, and the ones that are, The Brutalist and Nickel Boys, have yet to screen in Montreal (so would only qualify for our Best of 2025 list). That doesn’t mean, though, that it wasn’t a great or exciting year for film.

Montreal has an incredible film culture, and if you’re willing to go to festivals or check out smaller cinemas, there are more great films there to be discovered.

As always, this list is composed of films available to see in Montreal including festival and VOD titles. Some notable films that have featured on many best-of lists this year, like La Chimera, The Beast and Last Summer, were included on our 2023 list.

Honourable mentions: Dahomey (Mati Diop), Castration Movie Anthology i. Traps (Louise Weard, Furiosa (George Miller), She Is Conann (Bertrand Mandico) and The Bikeriders (Jeff Nichols)

  1. Afternoons of Solitude (Albert Serra)
  2. Grand Tour (Miguel Gomes)

One of the strangest films of the past year, Miséricorde has a strange probing tone. The latest film from the great french filmmaker, Alain Guirandie, the film follows the return of Jérémie to his hometown for an old friend’s funeral. The town is damp and wet, overflowing with strange characters. What was supposed to be a brief stay, is continually extended, as Jérémie finds himself lost in the slow, sensual rhythms of grief and small-town living. As Jérémie muses on making a permanent lifestyle change and taking over the local bakery, village tensions explode in unexpected ways.

As the film goes on, it becomes increasingly absurd. Crimes take place and strange interpersonal relationships emerge. The film finds itself increasingly on uneven footing, as it navigates dark comedy and tragedy, in a film that probes deeper into concepts of culpability and guilt. The film has an aura of the “mysterious stranger” genre, as a charismatic outsider disrupts the carefully curated lies people tell themselves. Jérémie, however, isn’t quite a stranger; he grew up in the town and has deep links to the people living there. He’s more like a phantom from the past, one that draws out old tensions.

One of the film’s greatest pleasures is its unrelenting sensuality which veers from genuinely transgressive to outright silly. In a sleepy town without much going on, the sex lives and habits of its inhabitants become a central point of focus. A wandering stranger, Jérémie takes full advantage of the sleepy horniness of the village people to fulfill his own desires and establish his position within the strange hierarchies of rural life. It also features one of the funniest and most unexpected erections in film history; an insane and risky proposition that suggests the depths of the film’s depravity and commitment to the exploration of power and responsability.

While very much a very pleasurable comedy and thriller, the film also explores the notion of living in a world beset by violence and cruelty. How do we keep on living our lives with our petty dramas amidst so much suffering? Guirandie’s skill as a filmmaker is that the almost baroque absurdity of the narrative doesn’t overtake its more sincere and challenging ideas.

The pleasure of Miséricorde lies in the fact that it remains mostly inscrutable, a series of scenes and characters who seem difficult to parse, but are nonetheless rooted in a beguiling naturalism. The film is genuinely laugh out loud funny and captures a wistful intensity about the fleeting nature of life that feels both appropriately glib and deadly serious.

Miséricorde (directed by Alain Guirandie)

Miséricorde is now available on VOD.

How Mobile Phones are Shaping Global Culture

Two decades ago, there were barely 1.8 billion people with mobile cellular subscriptions in the world. However, as of 2023, approximately 8.9 billion mobile cellular subscriptions[a] were recorded across the globe. That’s more mobile phone subscriptions than there are people in the world!

In fact, mobile phones are so ubiquitous that the World Bank’s Digital Dividends report[b] once suggested that mobile phones are more accessible to the poorest households than clean water and toilets.

Today, we’ll take a look at how mobile phones have become a transformative force in shaping global culture, addressing the impacts on multiple facets of global cultural and economic development.

The Ubiquity of Mobile Phones

We have established that there are more mobile cellular subscriptions than people in the world.

As of October 2024, all these subscriptions were coming from 5.75 billion[c] unique mobile phone users— about 70% of the world’s total population. That’s more people with mobile phones than there were people in the world 30 years ago.

Access to mobile phones and the internet makes it possible for you to connect with any person in any part of the world in a few seconds. It bridges the divide between the global north and the global south and allows for lots of cultural exchanges to happen across the globe.

One particularly interesting exchange is exemplified by members of the most highly-isolated Kanamari tribe, who took up mobile phones to document and showcase their ways of life to the world while broadcasting the impact of illegal logging on their indigenous lands.

Mobile Phones and Communication

With rapid mobile phone penetration comes an equally rapid transformation in how we communicate.

From the comfort of your home, you could, in an instant, reach out to your Kanamari friend who has never left the jungles of the Javari Valley in the Amazon.

You could text, call, or have a video chat with them, and it wouldn’t cost you much.

The recent advancements in mobile communication mean you can communicate with nearly anybody in any part of the world.

Service providers like BOSS Revolution have also made it possible for you to ensure your family and friends from the other side of the world will also have access to you at any given time.

For instance, with BOSS Revolution international mobile top-up, you can send credit to Jamaica from Canada.

And thanks to the versatility of mobile phones and mobile phone applications, users from vastly different cultural and economic backgrounds can communicate effectively in real time.

Mobile phone services, like international mobile top-ups, help ensure that these two-way communications between users are seamless by enabling individuals at either end with the airtime to initiate communication at any time.

This is made even more possible by the proliferation of communication platforms designed to cater to the varying needs of users across the globe, with some boasting integrated translation features.

Most smartphone keyboards have over 500 language inputs, allowing you to text in multiple languages, including logographic languages.

Social Media as a Cultural Catalyst

Let’s say you’d like to make some Indian food at home but don’t have an Indian friend to teach you; what would you do? You’d most likely turn to social media—YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, etc. There are many content creators with loads of content on how you can make a variety of Indian dishes.

All thanks to the democratization of content creation (through user-generated content) that comes with global mobile phone penetration, cultures that were once particular to certain people are now global trends.Anybody with a mobile phone could offer to share bits of their culture with people outside their communities.

We can see how K-pop has become one of the trendiest cultural imports in Canada and the U.S. as Korean influencers continue to churn out content that targets non-Koreans.

At the other end of the influence are North American, European, and African youths using their mobile phones to effectively consume that content, even in the absence of prior experience with Korean culture.

From reggaeton and afrobeat to Diwali and bubble teas, social media is propelling the rise of cross-cultural exchanges at a rapid rate.

Economic Impacts

Besides cultural exchanges, mobile phones are key drivers and facilitators of borderless shopping among Canadians.

According to Statista, about 15% of Canadians[d] use their smartphones to shop and make payments for daily purchases. On a broader scale, about 60% of Canadians[e] use their mobile phones for shopping every other time. Ultimately, mobile phones were Canadians’ most preferred device for cross-border shopping[f].

Today, Canada’s e-commerce sphere has witnessed a rapid turnaround with mobile app platforms like Amazon Shopping, Shein, and Canadian Tire, among other e-commerce giants and startups, chipping in to create a market that consistently exceeds CAD$3 billion monthly sales[g].

Conclusion

Mobile phones maintain the lead as the major communication tool in the world. That much is evident in the fact that there are more mobile cellular subscribers than there are people in the world.

They have become an indispensable tool for eliminating borders and keeping the world closely interconnected while fueling cultural exchanges and driving global economic development.

With mobile phone innovations happening all around, the new wave of smartphones will come with new user habits, routines, and customs that further redefine how we communicate, shop, interact with our immediate and virtual environments, and carry out other everyday activities.

Moving to Montreal can feel exciting, but choosing the right neighborhood might leave you unsure where to start. The city offers a mix of modern spaces, historic charm, and lively communities, making it hard to narrow down your options. Whether you’re relocating for work, school, or a fresh start, this guide will help you decide where to land in Montreal. You’ll learn about different areas, what makes them unique, and what to consider before choosing. Keep reading to find the best spot for your needs and feel confident about your move.

How to Choose the Right Neighborhood for You

Choosing the right neighborhood in Montreal depends on your lifestyle, priorities, and budget. However, moving to a new city, especially from a faraway place, adds challenges like packing, transportation, and navigating an unfamiliar place. Long-distance moves require more planning, but hiring long-distance moving experts can save you time and reduce stress by managing the heavy lifting while you focus on exploring neighbourhoods. Movers can also help coordinate schedules and handle fragile items, making the transition smoother and more organized.

When looking for the perfect neighborhood, ask yourself a few key questions to narrow your options. What is your monthly rent budget? Do you need access to public transit, or will you rely on a car? If you have children, are schools or parks important? Do you prefer a bustling area with nightlife or quieter streets for a more relaxed pace?

Take time to visit different parts of the city to get a feel for what suits you. Walk around, visit local cafes, or ask residents for their opinions. If that’s impossible, research online or connect with local groups to gather insights. Temporary rentals can also allow you to test an area before committing to it long-term.

Where to Land in Montreal: Downtown Montreal, The Pulse of the City

Downtown Montreal attracts professionals, students, and anyone who enjoys a fast-paced environment. The area offers easy access to offices, universities, shopping centers, and entertainment venues. Public transportation is reliable, and most places are within walking distance, making daily commutes convenient. Dining options range from casual eateries to upscale restaurants, and nightlife choices include bars, clubs, and theaters.

While the location has many perks, rent prices are higher due to demand. The busy streets may also feel noisy, especially during festivals and events. If you value convenience and energy, downtown could be the right fit. However, those looking for quieter spaces might prefer other neighbourhoods.

Plateau-Mont-Royal: Artsy and Trendy Vibes

Plateau-Mont-Royal draws attention for its artsy atmosphere and trendy vibe. The neighbourhood features colorful murals, cozy cafes, and vintage shops, making it a favorite for creatives and freelancers. It also has parks and green spaces where people can relax or exercise. The area feels lively without being too fast-paced, balancing work and leisure.

However, some older buildings may lack modern upgrades, which could be a drawback for those expecting newer amenities. Popular streets can also get crowded, especially on weekends, which may not suit those looking for quieter surroundings. Overall, it’s a good choice for anyone who values culture, character, and a strong local identity.

Mile End: Quirky, Cool, and Community-Focused

Mile End offers a quirky and creative vibe, making it a favorite for artists, musicians, and entrepreneurs. The area has independent cafes, local boutiques, and some of the city’s most popular bagel shops. It has a strong sense of community, with plenty of small businesses and cultural events that unite people.

The neighborhood’s unique character appeals to those who enjoy supporting local shops and exploring artistic spaces. Parking can be challenging, though, especially for those with cars, and rent prices have been rising due to its growing popularity. Despite these factors, Mile End remains a top choice for anyone looking for charm, culture, and a welcoming environment.

Griffintown: Modern Living Meets History

Griffintown blends modern living with historical charm, attracting young professionals and families. The neighborhood features newly built condos, trendy cafes, and art galleries, offering a mix of style and convenience. Its waterfront views and walking paths make it appealing for those who enjoy outdoor activities.

While the area continues to develop, construction projects may cause noise and traffic in certain spots. Some parts feel more modern than historic, which may not suit those looking for a traditional atmosphere. Despite these factors, Griffintown remains popular for its contemporary housing options and easy access to downtown.

Verdun: Affordable and Family-Friendly

Verdun offers affordable housing and a welcoming environment, making it a good choice for families and first-time renters who don’t know where to land in Montreal. The neighborhood has many parks, bike paths, and waterfront views, providing outdoor spaces for relaxation and activities. Its growing popularity has brought new restaurants, cafes, and shops while maintaining a quieter, residential feel.

Although Verdun is farther from downtown, public transit options make commuting manageable. Nightlife is more limited than other areas, which may not appeal to those looking for late-night entertainment. Verdun stands out as a practical option for anyone seeking a balance between affordability and community.

Old Montreal: History and Charm Combined

Old Montreal offers a mix of history, charm, and modern conveniences. It is known for its cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and landmarks, which make it popular with tourists and locals. The area also features high-end restaurants, boutique shops, and art galleries, which attract those who enjoy culture and dining experiences.

While the neighborhood provides a unique atmosphere, rental prices are higher, and tourist crowds can make it feel busy, especially during the summer. Parking is also limited, which may be challenging for drivers. Despite these factors, Old Montreal appeals to those who value character, walkable streets, and a connection to the city’s history.

Find Your Place in Montreal

Montreal offers a variety of neighborhoods, each with something different to offer. Whether you prefer the energy of downtown, the artistic vibe of Plateau-Mont-Royal, or the family-friendly feel of Verdun, there’s a spot that fits your lifestyle. Deciding where to land in Montreal depends on your needs and priorities, but exploring your options can make the process easier. Take your time, plan your move, and let the city’s charm guide you to the right place.

Equipping children with life-saving skills is crucial for preparing them to handle emergencies effectively. NCBI states that natural disasters are increasingly threatening children’s well-being, affecting 175 million annually, highlighting the importance of such preparedness.

Children, especially those under 5, face significantly higher mortality rates in these situations. Teaching children basic first aid, fire safety, and emergency contact knowledge can help mitigate these risks.

By learning these essential skills early, children not only gain confidence and responsibility but can actively contribute to their safety. It helps reduce the negative impacts of emergencies. In this article, we’ll explore how early preparation enables parents to foster physical resilience and emotional strength in children.

Letting Kids Know What Are Emergency Situations

Teaching children to identify emergencies is the first step in preparing them for crises. Parents should teach children about emergencies, such as fires or medical issues, and explain how to react in each situation.

Kids College states an essential part of this education is teaching them when to call emergency services. Practice dialing 000 early, ensuring they understand not to use it playfully. Creative methods like songs can help children memorize the number, making it easier for them to recall in an emergency.

Moreover, children should know to seek help from neighbors or passers-by if needed and be encouraged to communicate clearly with emergency operators.

Involving children in these discussions and role-playing different scenarios helps build confidence and reduces panic. It helps prepare them to react appropriately in real emergencies.

How can parents help children recognize different emergencies?

To help children recognize emergencies, parents should discuss common situations like fires, injuries, and accidents. Role-playing is an effective way to practice responses. Repetition and clear explanations help children understand the urgency and safety measures. Children will gain confidence by learning how to identify dangers and know who to approach for help.

Basic First Aid Skills

According to MDPI, a two-week program designed for early childhood education students resulted in a notable enhancement of their first aid skills and understanding. This low-cost program emphasizes the value of formal first-aid training in early education, helping children gain essential skills.

Parents can apply similar principles, starting with basic skills like cleaning cuts and progressing to more complex techniques. Local programs, online resources, and child-specific first aid classes offer valuable learning opportunities.

By teaching children these skills, they gain confidence and composure, enabling them to take action in emergencies while awaiting help.

Where can I find first-aid training resources suitable for children?

You can find first-aid training resources suitable for children through the American Red Cross. They offer various formats, including online, in-person, and blended classes, that provide essential skills for handling emergencies. These courses are designed for different learning preferences and offer certification valid for two years. Teachers can also participate in school programs to teach first aid to students for free.

Fire Safety Awareness

Children should be taught how to recognize fire hazards, understand fire alarms, and identify safe evacuation routes.

Portland.gov states one of the most effective methods for teaching fire safety is creating a clear escape plan. Ensure that every room has at least two unobstructed exits, and avoid using elevators in apartment buildings. Select a meeting place outside where everyone will gather after escaping. Practicing the escape plan at least twice a year ensures children react safely and quickly during fire emergencies.

It’s crucial to teach children about smoke inhalation risks and how to stay low when exiting a burning building. Fire safety lessons should also include knowing how to stop, drop, and roll if their clothing catches fire.

What should children do if they encounter a fire in public places?

Children should never fight fires but must know to call emergency services and evacuate quickly. Explaining the role of firefighters and why children should follow adult instructions during a fire is important. This knowledge ensures they respond safely without taking unnecessary risks and contributes to overall safety.

Firefighting Skills

Teaching children basic firefighting techniques, such as using a fire extinguisher, is an essential part of emergency preparedness. One crucial method is the PASS technique—Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep—which helps children understand how to properly operate an extinguisher.

However, it’s important to emphasize that only trained adults should engage in firefighting. In addition to learning these techniques, children should be aware of the risks associated with firefighting materials, such as firefighting foam. Research has linked certain firefighting foams to serious health concerns, including a potential connection to firefighting foam cancer

According to TorHoerman Law, studies show that chemicals in firefighting foam, like PFAS, can increase cancer risks, especially in children. It’s important to stress safety, ensuring children understand that they should leave firefighting duties to professionals to avoid exposure to harmful chemicals.

Emergency Contact and Communication

They must know when and how to call emergency services, as well as how to provide clear, concise information. Children should also learn the importance of having a list of emergency contacts, including family members, neighbors, or trusted adults.

Practicing emergency phone calls through role-playing can help kids stay calm under pressure. Ensuring children can reach the appropriate person quickly and relay key information improves their effectiveness in managing emergencies.

Role-Playing Emergency Scenarios

Role-playing various emergencies, like medical or fire situations, helps children practice staying calm, following procedures, and making decisions. Regular role-playing sessions help reinforce these skills and increase familiarity, reducing fear and anxiety when faced with a real emergency.

Role-playing encourages children to think critically and independently as they make choices based on the situation. Parents can simulate various scenarios to address different types of emergencies, ensuring their children are prepared for any crisis that may arise.

Empowering Kids with Safety Skills

Teaching children life-saving skills is a crucial step in preparing them for emergencies. Whether learning first aid, recognizing dangers, or exiting safely, these essential skills contribute to children’s overall safety during crises. Through consistent practice and open communication, parents can equip children with the knowledge and confidence to handle emergencies effectively.

How much would you pay for an unfinished, unfurnished building that you’ll never own, but for which you’re 100% responsible for utilities, maintenance and repairs? If you’re the City of Montreal, it’s a minimum of $68.6-million.

It’s a real estate deal so utterly bizarre that it raises serious suspicion of corruption so extreme it would make Frank Zampino blush. Montreal’s Sanaaq Centre — an as-yet unopened library and community centre near Cabot Square meant to help the local unhoused Inuit population (though legally prohibited from being a homeless shelter) — will have cost the city $5.9-million by the time it’s projected to open (May 2025).

For what the city will spend on the Sanaaq Centre, Montreal could have built several libraries, or homeless shelters.

It appears that this incomprehensible arrangement was designed to give Devimco, the profitable real estate developer, a tax break. More unusual is that Projet Montréal has vigorously defended every incoherent step of a project that stretches back to the Coderre administration.

Mayor Plante has to take responsibility for this unmitigated dumpster fire. An independent inquiry is needed. Montrealers elected Projet and Plante because they were sick and tired after years of unhinged corruption. To defend this particularly egregious example is inexcusable.

Mayor Plante owes Montrealers more than an explanation: she owes us accountability.

Montreal author Jacob Wren on the role of art in a world full of war, injustice and political upheaval

It’s hard to read Jacob Wren’s latest novel, Dry Your Tears to Perfect Your Aim, without thinking of Palestine.

In an interview, Wren agrees, but clarifies that, for him, the thinking for this novel really started in 2019. And while bad things were happening then too, of course, it is hard not to feel particularly overcome thinking about the many international events that have followed.

Set in an unnamed war-ridden territory, readers follow a western (and likely white) narrator as he navigates his existential qualms amidst the backdrop of bombs. It is a book full of discussions. Nearly every page has a question. Readers will feel the need to interpret our narrator’s impulse to flee to this warzone as some sort of moral sanctity, but he himself is quick to correct any such assumptions. Existentialism being a privilege in and of itself — to question the meaning of one’s existence implies that one’s existence is secure enough to add meaning to, a thing that is hard to do when you’re trying to stay alive in the first place.

Wren marks the early seeds of this novel around America’s “Shock and Awe” campaign as they commenced their invasion in Iraq in 2003. “They bombed, mercilessly and constantly,” says Wren. “And, it just felt so violent and insane to watch that happening on television. All these people protested the thing and then the thing happened anyway. It kind of makes me feel insane to feel like that’s the world I live in. And my first impulse was: I want to go there, even though that makes no sense and would help no one.”

Wren’s narrator, too, is overwrought with helplessness. He’s in awe of the perseverance of the local people he encounters and the deterministically relational society its survivors attempt to build from the ruins of its native nation. This is what I mean when I say this book is full of conversations. It’s a novel made up of vignettes of actual discourse. And what’s more, those Indigenous to the land feel no such awe in their own tenacity. For them, the need for survival and betterment is just a given. It made me wonder: Could it be that optimism was in fact just… realistic?

“At one point in the book, the narrator (refers to) a practical utopia,” says Wren. “I think maybe one way that the utopia in my book differs from other utopias is that it’s not actually that utopian. It’s maybe just a little bit better than what we currently have. It’s not, you know, miraculously better in every way. Anything you can do that might improve someone’s life or help people who are oppressed is worth doing, even if it’s not a miracle.”

On p. 25, Wren has the narrator reflect something that, to me, reads as a tragically pure Wren sentiment: “And why must I view all works of art through my political desires?”

“Yeah,” Wren admits, “I would say this protagonist is the character that’s closest to myself that I’ve ever written. It’s me imagining myself in a place that’s more politically hopeful than where I currently live.” And, “Yes,” he continues, “all my work is about the relationship between art and politics. That is definitely true. And that relationship is enormously complex and full of doubt and confusion.”

“In some deep way, I feel I need to be an artist. I have no choice,” say Wren. “But I don’t actually think what the world needs right now is art. I think it needs activism and it needs people who are really able to get out there and fight. I think art can maybe do something, but it’s not the primary driver of change. I think art is probably more a reflection of the world than driving change in the world.”

“But nonetheless, since I need to be an artist and art is the main thing I’m able to do, I need to think, you know, what kind of art is most politically helpful? What kind of art would be most meaningful for me politically? I feel injustice, so if the only band-aid I have to put on that pain is art, I have to make the most of it even though it’s deeply insufficient.”

Citizens, readers, and most likely peers of Wren, who are doom-scrolling as we speak, will feel reignited by Wren’s capsule of self-doubt. After all, we are all interrogating ourselves with these very questions: What can I do? How can I be of help? And what is the meaning of art? Though Wren never claims to answer anything here, he has written a book that at least reminds us that the point of questioning has never been the answer. The point has always been to ask. ■

Who could have ever imagined one of the best films of the year would be about a moose rotting in the boreal forest? Robert Morin’s latest, Festin boréal, is an incredible feat of filmmaking, a joyous and macabre journey into depths of the natural world. The film begins with a rapidly edited hunting sequence where a hunter falls an adult male moose. Most of the rest of the film follows the rotting corpse over the seasons, where it becomes a wonderland of life and movement.

Far from boring or still, Festin boréal brims with life. The behind-the-scenes process of making the film (using animal actors and seven different moose corpses) blurs the line between fiction and nonfiction in the realm of natural documentary. Rather than especially dark, the movie has a strange and hypnotic emotiveness that draws us in. Death doesn’t feel like an endpoint, but a part of life. The moose’s sacrifice doesn’t feel in vain — well, not quite.

Perhaps the extended beauty of the film is how Morin integrates the human element. The idea of the natural world “untouched” by humans no longer feels like a possibility as earth, water and air are infected by microplastics and our influence. Yet, as many people continue to see nature as something apart from humanity, a film like Festin Boréal emphasizes our links to this world and also our carelessness.

The film has incredible sound design and a strong sense of intimacy. It’s amazing what Morin has been able to accomplish, and his work feels far more immediate than some of the best and most expensive nature documentaries out there. It’s a movie that ultimately celebrates life, and even for those skeptical about the premise, it’s an exciting, thrilling and moving experience.

Festin boréal (directed by Robert Morin)

Festin boréal (aka Wild Feast) is currently available on VOD.

Online casinos might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the picturesque city of Montreal. Known for its unique blend of European charm and North American flair, the city boasts a rich history, stunning architecture, and an exceptional culinary scene. But beyond being a top holiday destination—especially during the winter months—Montreal is also home to a growing online gambling market, with major players like Evolution setting up shop.

While reputable brands can elevate the gaming experience, choosing the right payment method is just as crucial. After all, the last thing you want is to face difficulties withdrawing your winnings. Selecting the right payment method is essential for a secure and hassle-free experience. With numerous options available, players can choose from traditional methods like credit and debit cards to modern solutions such as e-wallets, prepaid cards, and cryptocurrencies. Each method offers its own advantages, from enhanced security features to faster transaction times, catering to different player preferences.

In fact, according to NZ casino experts NoDeposit365, “The safest payment methods prioritise encryption, two-factor authentication, and user anonymity, ensuring that player funds remain secure.” By choosing trusted and reliable payment options, players can enjoy peace of mind and focus on their gaming experience without worrying about security concerns.

At Montreal online casinos, you’ll find a wide range of exciting payment methods, each with its own unique advantages. However, what works well for one type of player might not be the best option for you. That’s why we’ve rounded up the most popular payment methods for Montreal online casinos, helping you gain a deeper understanding of what’s available so you can discover the best solution for your needs.

Unbeatable Classic

You know what they say: if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it—and that couldn’t be more true when it comes to payment methods. While these classic options might not be as flashy as some of the newer innovations, sometimes all you need are the tried-and-true solutions that have stood the test of time. Their reliability stems from decades of use and the trust they’ve earned from players who value simple transactions and strong fraud protection.

For many, these dependable choices offer peace of mind while they enjoy their favourite online casino games. Let’s dive into these unbeatable classic options and see why they remain fan favourites.

Credit and Debit Cards

It’s impossible to talk about classic online casino payment methods without mentioning credit and debit cards. These methods are not only widely accepted but also incredibly convenient and accessible, making them easy to use even for those who aren’t very tech-savvy. Credit cards, in particular, offer added flexibility, allowing you to play using credit, which is great if you want to extend your gaming session.

Additionally, both credit and debit cards come with robust fraud protection and security features, such as chargebacks and encryption, ensuring that your personal and financial information stays safe while you play. However, some banks may impose restrictions on gambling transactions, and you might encounter extra fees for cash advances or currency conversion.

Prepaid Cards

If you’re looking for some privacy without the hassle of cryptocurrencies, prepaid cards might be a great choice. They’re super secure since you don’t have to share any personal or financial information, keeping your details safe from cybercriminals. Plus, they’re easy to get and allow for instant deposits.

Just keep in mind that some prepaid cards don’t allow withdrawals, which could be an issue if you want to cash out your winnings. In that case, you’ll need to find another way to get your money.

Bank Transfers

Bank transfers, like Interac and InstaDebit, are excellent payment methods for online casino transactions due to their security and reliability. These options allow players to transfer funds directly from their bank account to the casino, making the process straightforward and secure.

Bank transfers are especially great for larger transactions, as they often come with lower fees compared to other methods. While deposits are typically quick, it’s important to note that withdrawals may take a bit longer—usually ranging from a few days to a week.

New Age Methods

Over the last few years, technological advancements have opened up a world of possibilities, offering new opportunities for more secure, faster, and seamless transactions, eliminating the delays often associated with traditional payment methods. Here are some of the most popular new-age payment methods that have been changing the game, one transaction at a time.

E-Wallets

It’s no surprise that e-wallets have become a favourite choice for players depositing or withdrawing funds at online casinos in Montreal. With brands like Skrill, PayPal, and Neteller, players enjoy a hassle-free transactional experience that makes cashing in their winnings quick and easy. These platforms also provide an extra layer of security with features like encryption and two-factor authentication, ensuring your personal and financial information stays protected from prying eyes.

Cryptocurrency

If it’s good enough for Elon Musk and former president Donald Trump, then it’s certainly good enough for the players of Montreal. Cryptocurrencies have been making headlines globally, and with mass adoption just around the corner, it’s no surprise they’re quickly becoming one of the most popular payment methods for online casinos in the region. The unmatched security they offer, powered by blockchain technology, ensures that every transaction is permanently recorded on a decentralized ledger, making them an excellent choice for players seeking a reliable and secure payment option.

Zimpler

This mobile-first payment method is as straightforward as it sounds, offering a no-fuss, no-frills approach to online casino transactions. With Zimpler, players can make deposits and withdrawals directly from their smartphones in just a few taps. Yes, you read that right—quick, hassle-free payments mean players can focus on enjoying their favorite games rather than stressing over payment delays.

Zimpler also prioritizes security, using advanced encryption and verification processes to ensure all transactions are safe and protected. On top of that, the platform helps players stay in control of their spending by tracking transactions and allowing users to set limits—a fantastic feature for those looking to gamble responsibly.

Google Pay

Google Play is becoming a go-to payment option for online gamblers in Montreal thanks to its fantastic convenience. All you need is a Google account so linking it to their casino account is quick and hassle-free. No extra sign-ups or long verification processes needed!

It’s also safe. Google Play uses encryption and multi-factor authentication to keep your financial info secure. Plus, it’s perfect for mobile players since you can make payments directly from your phone without any fuss.
