The long-awaited restoration of Sherbrooke’s historic armouries is moving ahead, with government officials announcing the launch of the design phase. The project, which has been in the works for nearly a decade, will see the Belvédère Street and William Street Armouries preserved and modernized, while plans for a third facility are also in the works.

The announcement was made by Élisabeth Brière, Minister of Veterans Affairs and MP for Sherbrooke, alongside Marie-Claude Bibeau, MP for Compton-Stanstead, and Honorary Colonel Wilfrid Morin. The event, held in Sherbrooke on March. 19, confirmed that the federal government has signed an agreement to move the project forward.

“Today marks an important milestone in the preservation of our armouries in Sherbrooke,” said Brière. “After four years of hard work alongside reservists, veterans, the city and the Sherbrooke community, I am very proud to have obtained the signature of phase 2 of the project.”

The restoration efforts are part of Canada’s broader defence strategy, aiming to provide reservists with modern, well-equipped infrastructure while maintaining the historical significance of these buildings.

A decade-long battle

The fight to preserve the two historic armouries dates back to 2015, when the possibility of replacing them with a new facility was first discussed. At the time, there was opposition from certain branches of the Department of National Defence (DND), which had proposed a completely new building rather than investing in restoration.

“They would have preferred something new, something functional near the highway, like a Costco,” Bibeau said in an interview after the announcement. “But Sherbrooke has such a rich military history, and these two armouries are an important part of our heritage.”

Bibeau and Brière worked closely with Morin and the “Sauvons les manèges” group to push for the preservation of the existing buildings. The efforts were supported by strong recruitment numbers from Sherbrooke’s reserve units, which are among the most active in Canada.

“Sherbrooke is recognized for being one of the best in Canada in terms of recruitment and responding to calls for action,” Bibeau noted. “When National Defence calls Sherbrooke, we go.”

The Lennoxville Borough Council’s March 18 meeting was short but packed with updates on community events and upcoming projects. With only one resident in attendance, the meeting moved quickly through formalities before borough councillors took the opportunity to share news about local initiatives, including the firefighter memorial and the participatory budget process.

Borough Councillor Jennifer Garfat provided an update on the firefighter memorial project, responding to a question about its timeline. She confirmed that the borough is still waiting for a response from the firefighters’ association regarding a suitable date for the dedication ceremony. “We’re hoping to hear back soon so we can start planning,” she said, adding that the borough aims to hold the event within the next few months.

A key highlight of the meeting was the announcement of the participatory budget presentation, which will take place at the Centre Amédée-Beaudoin on March 31. Residents will have the chance to review and vote on four different projects vying for funding. “For the first time, we have more than two contestants,” a councillor remarked, noting the added element of competition this year. Council members encouraged the public to get involved, emphasizing that votes can be cast in person, online, or at the borough office for those unable to attend on the set date.

In their closing remarks, councillors highlighted several upcoming events in the community. The Lennoxville Library was praised for its recent Canada Reads event, and council members acknowledged the successful return of the Women’s Centre’s International Women’s Day dinner, which hadn’t been held since 2019 due to pandemic disruptions.

Other community activities include the Grace Village book sale running from March 20 to 22, a public consultation on the Nature Plan scheduled for April 16, and a lecture by the Eastern Townships Resource Centre on asbestos and its global impact. Additionally, the Bishop’s University Singers are set to perform multiple shows at the end of the month, and council members recommended purchasing tickets in advance due to high demand.

Pierre Poilievre’s fear of media scrutiny is yet more proof that he’s unfit to be prime minister

The Conservatives’ move to bar the media from travelling with Pierre Poilievre’s election campaign is 100% on-brand. They’re breaking with decades of tradition on the part of all major political parties in Canada, not just because they’ve adopted Trump’s anti-media stance — hardly surprising given that Poilievre’s campaign manager Jenni Byrne has been known to wear a MAGA hat — but because what the CPC is offering Canadians doesn’t hold up to any scrutiny whatsoever.

With an election coming, and their numbers tanking, the Conservatives simply can’t afford to risk more Canadians discovering the truth: that their candidate is a weak Trumpist with no ideas who floated to the top of their ranks on the strength of misinformation and endorsements from fascists and alt-right influencers.

For over two years, Poilievre has been running on cheap slogans and dubious alliances. Kicking the media off the campaign trail reveals that all his team can bring themselves to do right now is release packaged soundbites and hold Trump-style rallies in front of the CPC’s maple-MAGA base.

Shelby St-Hilaire brings home two silvers from Special Olympics World Games

By William Crooks

Shelby St-Hilaire returned from the 2025 Special Olympics World Games in Turin, Italy, with two silver medals and a wealth of experience from competing on the world stage. The skier from the Eastern Townships represented Canada in alpine events, taking second place in both the Super-G and slalom competitions.

“It was an amazing experience,” St-Hilaire said. “I got fourth place in one of my events, which I was furious about, but then I bounced back and won two silvers.”

The Special Olympics World Games brought together 90 Canadian athletes who competed in various winter sports, securing an impressive haul of 116 medals. Beyond the competition, the Games were a celebration of connection, camaraderie, and personal achievement. For St-Hilaire, the journey to Italy started long before stepping onto the slopes.

Preparation and travel

The process began with a staging camp in Toronto, where athletes were introduced to Italian culture and etiquette before heading overseas. “We went to an Italian cathedral in Toronto and learned about what to do and what not to do in Italy,” St-Hilaire said. “No elbows on the table, no ketchup on pizza, and definitely no pineapple.”

From Toronto, the team flew to Frankfurt, Germany, before continuing to Milan and then by bus to Turin. The first week in Italy was spent acclimating, and the second week took them to Sestriere, where the ski competitions were held. “The ski hill was right on the border,” he noted. “If you took the gondola up, you were on the French side. If you stayed in Sestriere, you were in Italy.”

Competing against the world’s best

St-Hilaire competed in the advanced M2 division, facing top athletes from Norway, Italy, the Netherlands, and the United States. He credits his performance to diligent preparation and a bold strategy. “One of my coaches thought I wasn’t ready for a jump start, but I took the risk, and it turned out to be a good move.”

A jump start in skiing involves positioning on one’s knees, edging toward the bump, and pushing off aggressively to gain speed at the beginning of a race. The strategy paid off, helping him secure two podium finishes. “The key to my success was studying,” St-Hilaire explained. “I talked to my coaches in Quebec, got some advice, and applied it. It worked.”

Waahli, Se7en Bubbles (self-released)

At only seven tracks but north of 25 minutes, Waahli knows how to make the most of a short runtime. His newest album, Se7en Bubbles, is further proof of that, while also seeing the trilingual local rapper/singer sound more confident and relaxed than ever. One of the themes here is impermanence, which is the title of its Nicholas Craven-produced fifth track — one that touches on grief in painfully vivid fashion. Going from celebratory (“Vendredi”) to thoughtful (“Impermanence,” the Nujabes-esque “Who We Are”) in English, French and/or Créole with equal gusto, those two emotions basically form separate halves of this album. His hooks sound stronger and punchier, the production is excellent throughout, and I’d love to see what more Waahli could do with this musical direction on a lengthier body of work. 8/10 Trial Track: “Impermanence”

Great Players Can Be Found North of the Border

How Basketball Grew in Canada

Canadians and basketball aren’t usually synonymous but they are getting there. The Canada basketball team roster features names like Jamal Murray, Andrew Wiggins, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, all NBA superstars in their own right.

Their rise and the growth of the sport in Canada is a part of how international the game of basketball has become. For years it would have been unheard of for a basketball player of any ilk to be from North of the Border.

One of the first to create a path for Canadian cagers was Leo Rautins. He played for a season at Minnesota before transferring to Syracuse, where Rautins excelled. He was so good, in fact, that he was a first-round pick in 1983, drafted 17th overall by the Philadelphia 76ers.

Rautins’ success sparked an interest in basketball by Canadians as well as basketball minds on the prep, college and NBA levels. Since then, their play and players have taken off to the point where many Canadian basketball players are recruited for prep machines, earn college scholarships and then find their way to the NBA if their skills are of that level.

Andrew Wiggins is an NBA champion. Jamal Murray is an NBA champion. They were vital cogs on teams that won titles. Wiggins was a first overall selection in the NBA draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2014.

How Many Canadian Basketball Players Are in the NBA?

There were 21 Canadian NBA players on opening night rosters for the 2024-25 season. That number is down from the 27 that were in the Association last season. In an interesting fact, this is the 11th straight season Canada is the most represented country outside the USA when it comes to players in the league. It is a testament to how the game has grown North of the Border on levels that set players up for professional careers.

The complete list of Canadian players who were on NBA rosters when this season tipped off, per Canada basketball:

  • Tristan Thompson – Cleveland Cavaliers
  • Dwight Powell – Dallas Mavericks
  • Olivier-Maxence Prosper – Dallas Mavericks
  • Jamal Murray – Denver Nuggets
  • Andrew Wiggins – Golden State Warriors (now Miami Heat)
  • Dillon Brooks – Houston Rockets
  • Andrew Nembhard – Indiana Pacers
  • Bennedict Mathurin – Indiana Pacers
  • Brandon Clarke – Memphis Grizzlies
  • Zach Edey – Memphis Grizzlies
  • Leonard Miller – Minnesota Timberwolves
  • Nickeil Alexander-Walker – Minnesota Timberwolves
  • Luguentz Dort – Oklahoma City Thunder
  • Shai Gilgeous-Alexander – Oklahoma City Thunder
  • Caleb Houstan – Orlando Magic
  • Cory Joseph – Orlando Magic
  • Dalano Banton – Portland Trail Blazers
  • Shaedon Sharpe – Portland Trail Blazers
  • Trey Lyles – Sacramento Kings
  • Kelly Olynyk – Toronto Raptors
  • RJ Barrett – Toronto Raptors

Why Is Basketball So Popular in Canada?

Basketball has seen immense growth internationally through the years. Canada is one of the many countries that caught hoop fever. A good part of that can be attributed to the national pride that is associated with teams that play in the country.

While the Canada basketball team roster has yet to achieve a great deal of global success, Canadian players in the NBA have become stars. When you combine the stardom and achievements these players have garnered with the success of the Toronto Raptors as a franchise it is easy to see why basketball is so popular in Canada. Keep an eye on how these talented Canadians and their teams are performing by checking out the NBA 1h lines before the games.

It may never rival hockey simply because of the history that great sport has with the nation but Canadian fans have become passionate about basketball on all levels, particularly when it comes to following their stars on all platforms.

Why Does the NBA Include Canada?

The NBA has been at the forefront of growing its audience internationally. Part of that has been helped by the amount of “foreign” players who have become stars in the game. The league began its foray into international play with two franchises in Canada. The Vancouver Grizzlies and Toronto Raptors. The Grizzlies were not successful and moved to Memphis.

However, Toronto has been an incredible success for the league. Fans clamor for tickets and the Raptors won an NBA championship. They draw whether the team is winning or losing. Think about how the Toronto faithful stand by their Maple Leafs and that is a similar parallel. It doesn’t matter the result, they are our team and we will support them through thick and thin.

What would be intriguing is if the NBA had attempted to have a team in Vancouver later than when it began. The more popular the NBA has become, the bigger its audience. Timing is everything and it just may not have been right for the team in the Great Northwest.

Local Journalism Initiative

Business leaders, government officials, and economic experts gathered at the U.S.-Canada border in Newport on Mar. 18 for a roundtable discussion on the economic and social impact of President Trump’s trade war and the sweeping tariffs imposed on Canada. The event, hosted by U.S. Senator Peter Welch (D-Vt.), saw participation from a wide range of businesses from Vermont and Quebec, including representatives from Sherbrooke, highlighting the deep economic ties between the two regions.

Welch, a member of the Senate Finance Committee, opened the discussion with strong remarks against the tariffs, emphasizing the importance of U.S.-Canada relations. “I am absolutely horrified at these tariffs,” Welch stated. “I am appalled at what our president is saying about Canada in referencing to a 51st state. There’s no place for that. We are neighbours, we’re allies, we’re friends, and I want to keep it that way.”

Joining him was Marie-Claude Bibeau, MP for Compton-Stanstead, who echoed the sentiment that these tariffs pose a serious threat to economic stability and sovereignty. “This is not the right thing to do, not for your economy and not for ours either,” Bibeau said. She noted that Canada was prepared to retaliate with counter-tariffs while emphasizing the need for cooperation. “We are not going to let ourselves be bullied,” she said firmly.

Economic fallout: Business owners speak out

Representatives from both sides of the border expressed frustration over the uncertainty and financial strain caused by the tariffs. Dave Laforce, owner of Built By Newportwhose company has long-standing partnerships with Canadian suppliers, explained how the trade war was directly affecting operations. “We have a culture in our business to form long-lasting relationships with both our vendors and our customers,” he said. “The yo-yo of every hour, things changing, has been brutal.”

Denis Larue, president of J.A. Larue Inc, a snowblower manufacturer from Quebec, outlined the tangled supply chain that exists between Canada and the U.S. “We buy engines and components from the U.S., bring them to Canada to assemble into our machines, and then export them back to the U.S.,” he explained. “If we have to pay tariffs at every stage, prices will skyrocket, hurting American consumers just as much.”

Jody Spearing from UTV International, a Montreal-based manufacturer, highlighted concerns over how tariffs could disrupt production. “We have aggressive plans to launch new products in the U.S.,” he said. “If tariffs stay in place, we might have to reconsider those investments.”

Ayer’s Cliff Library will soon be more accessible thanks to a federal investment of $115,514 announced on March 17 by Compton-Stanstead MP Marie-Claude Bibeau. The funding, provided through the Enabling Accessibility Fund, will go towards installing a lifting platform to improve access for people with reduced mobility, seniors, and parents with strollers.

Bibeau made the announcement during a small gathering at the library, highlighting the importance of accessible community spaces. “Libraries are a gateway to culture, and even more so in smaller towns,” she said. “It’s great to have an accessible library—it helps with access to information, literacy, and learning, and it serves as a community gathering place.”

Currently, accessing the library can be difficult for some visitors due to mobility barriers. The new platform will be installed outside the building, making entry easier and safer. “Building a more inclusive Canada requires a lot of work, but it’s important work that must be done,” Bibeau stated. “This addition, supported by the Accessibility Fund, will allow more people to take advantage of the library and its cultural activities.”

Ayer’s Cliff Mayor Simon Roy also spoke at the event, expressing gratitude for the federal support. “The town has always had a very good relationship with the federal government,” he said. “Whenever we’ve needed something, your team has been there.” Roy emphasized that the library is not just a building filled with books but a space sustained largely by volunteers. “For ten months of the year, it’s run entirely by volunteers,” he noted, highlighting their dedication to keeping the facility operational.

The library’s central location in the community makes accessibility improvements even more significant. “For small towns, it’s important to have a centre where multiple services are available,” Roy said. “People come here not just for books, but also as part of their daily routine—stopping by after visiting the post office or the grocery store.”

REVIEW: Trouver refuge is an exhibition that must be seen

Oksana Mukhina

[email protected]

A touching and poignant exhibition opened on March 13 at the Musée de la Civilisation. Trouver Refuge tells the story of Mohammed Shofi, who came to Quebec 17 years ago from a refugee camp in Bangladesh.

In 1990, when Shofi wasn’t yet two years old, his family fled his homeland of Burma (now Myanmar). The Rohingya people, to which his family belongs, were suffering from violence and discrimination and deprived of their citizenship, which made them the largest stateless population and the most persecuted minority in the world. Shofi’s family trekked through the for- est for three days, and finally settled in a refugee camp in Kutupalong, Bangladesh. At the time, no one could imagine that they would call the camp home for 18 years, until Shofi got an opportunity to resettle in Quebec.

This exhibition is designed as an immersive, walk-through experience, accompanied by the calm voice of Shofi. Visitors wear headphones and discover his emotional story of resilience, courage and tenderness, family connections, new discoveries and finding a home in Quebec.

This route is full of memories: of a three-kilogram bag of rice, which everybody in the camp received every two weeks, a soccer game that kids played all the time, the sound of the wind, elephants that could easily ruin the camp houses, of the “zombie truck” that could come at 6 a.m. and take people back to Burma, of a big airplane with the feeling of freedom, of the first snow and snow boots, of the first house, the first job as a restaurant dishwasher and everyday struggles on the way to finding home.

Documentary filmmakers and founders of the production studio MO FILMS, Mélanie Carrier and Olivier Higgins were working on a documentary about the Kutupalong camp in 2018. They finished filming there and were searching for a translator in Quebec. Many people recommended Shofi, who became not only a translator but a narrator. Hundreds of hours of shared creative work made them real friends.

“We thought that it was very important to share his story, from Burma to here now. Because there is hope, there is light,” Carrier said. When the filmmakers started to interview him, they didn’t know what shape the project would take. Finally, they decided to make an immersive exhibition. “We proposed it to the museum and they were very touched.”

This exhibition is made in two dimensions: sound and visual. Montreal artist Karine Giboulo handled the visual element, making fantastic dioramas of Shofi’s journey out of polymer clay, wood, cotton wool, paint and other materials.

“Through the sculpture, I wanted to give life to the story of Mohammed, and at the same time bring to life the humanity of his people, the Rohingya, up- rooted by violence and oppression. To retrace his journey, to understand his exile, his resilience and his determination in the face of hardships, but also grasping his desire to put down roots and his heartbreak in the face of the sieges, still in the camps, was a deeply moving experience. Today, while intolerance is [ingrained] in our discourse and our policies, this exhibition is needed more than ever,” Giboulo said at the press conference before the opening of Trouver refuge.

“The message is very simple: by listening to the stories of others, you understand them better, and if you understand them better, you are ready to welcome them. It’s not only about Rohingya; it’s about people who had to leave their homes and come to another country. I think that it will help Canadians and the Quebecers to better understand the path that you have to cross to come here,” said Carrier.

The exhibition is bilingual (French and English). It started March 13 and will be open until Jan. 6, 2026.
