According to a study by the Angus Reid Institute, a majority of Canadians believe that other NATO countries would come to our defence if Donald Trump used the U.S. military to invade Canada. NATO allies technically have an obligation to militarily defend member states from acts of aggression.
58% of Canadians trust that other NATO countries would come to Canada’s aid in the event of a U.S. military attack, while 22% do not.
While Trump has said that he won’t use the military to force Canada to join the United States, Canadians don’t believe him.
“If it were to come to war, a majority of Canadians believe other NATO allies would help defend Canada from American aggression. In the case of Greenland, which is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, a founding NATO member, a former U.S. ambassador to Denmark believes NATO ‘would be compelled to respond’ in the event of American aggression.”

The Angus Reid Institute conducted an online survey from Jan. 10 to 13, 2025 among a representative randomized sample of 1,653 Canadian adults who are members of Angus Reid Forum.

Whatever you’re expecting Companion to be, you’re wrong. A genre-bending, twist-laden sci-fi thriller with a dark sense of humour written and directed by Drew Hancock, Companion is anything but predictable. The film opens as a rom-com, as we witness the clumsy meet-cute at a grocery store between Iris (Sophie Thatcher) and Josh (Jack Quaid). Not long after, we have a time jump as the pair are en-route to a high-tech cabin in the woods to spend the weekend with Josh’s friends. Soon, the soft romanticism of our opening will give way and get very bloody very fast.
While in many ways, the film resembles the structure of a slasher film, it subverts those expectations. Even as the stakes heighten and a pervasive violence sets in, the characters take precedence over all. Cult MTL was able to sit down with three of the cast members — Lukas Gage, Megan Suri and Harvey Guillén — to discuss the film and the impact of working within genre cinema.

Megan Suri, who starred in the underrated It Lives Inside and co-starred in Missing, has already made a name for herself working within horror cinema. “That’s part of working in these fun genres — it doesn’t have to be grounded all the time,” she says. “You have the freedom to go off the rails and you can always be pulled back in, but I think you have more creative freedom.”
Lukas Gage — who’s been on Euphoria and White Lotus, but also films like Smile 2 and How to Blow up a Pipeline — adds, “We’re entering a generation where Boulderlights [Pictures] last film, Barbarian, there are tonal shifts in every act. Some things can be bigger and other moments more intimate. They can all be in the same story and it doesn’t have to follow a certain manual.”
While Companion is often blood-soaked and features an ironic and irreverent sense of humour, the movie does take the time to root itself in real emotions. When you strip it to its bare essentials, it’s a film about desire: to want and be wanted. Each character finds themselves in a relationship that is an attempt to overcome their loneliness. It’s a film that feels pertinent to a modern world that often seems rife with alienation and isolation.

Harvey Guillén, best known as Guillermo on What We Do in the Shadows, discusses his character Eli’s relationship with Patrick, played by Gage. “We’re in a relationship and in love and we wanted to convey that with our characters,” he says. “We were bringing that love on set and intertwining it into the characters. It does come across that these people genuinely love each other. I think of the whole storyline and all the characters, and our love story feels the most natural and organic — and it’s the queer love story.”
Part of the film’s central conceit is that Iris is not in fact a real girl, but a romantic “companion” that Josh has purchased and programmed. Unaware that she isn’t human, Iris has memories, emotions and desires. She feels insecure. If you could have the perfect partner, the film seems to ask, how would you want them to be? The answer, it turns out, will be very revealing.
Even being willing to abandon human relationships in favour of an artificial one feels emblematic of the so-called loneliness epidemic. Giullén says, “Loneliness is a real thing, and I think sometimes you accept the love you think you deserve.” Speaking for his character Eli, he goes on to say, “He surrounds himself with fabulous people but he wants a hot boyfriend. You could have all of that and still not accept the real love that someone is presenting clearly in front of you, which is heartbreaking. I think a lot of people can relate to that. It’s something that’s human nature. You start with yourself. You have to love yourself first, and then you can accept the love that someone gives you.”

Suri adds, “A big part and a big theme in this movie is how loneliness is caused by this growing connection to A.I. and to technology. It’s taking us away from real connection. The closer we get to technology, the farther we’re going to move away from our counterparts that are here right now and exist. So, we have to find a way to get back to normalcy before this becomes our new normal.”
In the usually barren landscape of January releases, Companion emerges as a fresh, original and bright antidote to the long nights and cold days of winter. In an era of growing loneliness and violent desperation, it’s a film that isn’t just fluffy entertainment but speaks to the moment as well.
Companion is now playing in Montreal theatres.

GRIS Estrie is launching a new initiative aimed at 2SLGBTQ+ seniors, addressing the unique challenges faced by those aged 55 and older in the Eastern Townships. The project, Pour que GRIS soit arc-en-ciel, will bring discussion groups, educational workshops, and an online platform to communities across the region in an effort to create more inclusive and supportive spaces.
According to GRIS Estrie Director General Samuell Beaudoin, 2SLGBTQ+ seniors are often overlooked. “They are used to seeing services focused on young folks, but we forget that people over 55 are also part of the 2SLGBTQ+ community,” Beaudoin said in a Feb. 3 interview. “There are prejudices to demystify, and the way to address them differs from younger generations. It’s not that there are more prejudices—just different ones.”
Beaudoin noted that many 2SLGBTQ+ seniors have lived through periods of intense discrimination, both politically and socially. As a result, some retreat back into the closet when they enter new environments, particularly in seniors’ residences or community spaces where they are unsure of how they will be received. “When the political landscape gets tougher, people tend to hide,” Beaudoin said. “Some 2SLGBTQ+ elders go back into the closet just to ensure they are in a safe environment.”
To counter this isolation and promote understanding, GRIS Estrie will hold demystification workshops specifically tailored for seniors. The organization will also introduce coffee meetings and themed conferences designed to foster conversation and exchange. One session, titled When I Was Young, There Was No Such Thing as Gender Diversity, aims to connect with participants through historical context and personal experiences. Another, I Just Introduced My Daughter’s Girlfriend to My Family, will address evolving family dynamics and societal acceptance.

Following a second phone conversation with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau today, U.S. President Donald Trump has put a hold of at least 30 days on the 25% tariffs that the U.S. was going to impose on Canadian products tomorrow.
Trump decided to pause tariffs for a month, as he did earlier today with Mexico, while Canada implements its $1.3-billion border control plan. Canada is also committing to appoint a Fentanyl Czar and to list cartels as terrorists.
“Canada is implementing our $1.3 billion border plan — reinforcing the border with new choppers, technology and personnel, enhanced coordination with our American partners, and increased resources to stop the flow of fentanyl. Nearly 10,000 frontline personnel are and will be working on protecting the border. In addition, Canada is making new commitments to appoint a Fentanyl Czar, we will list cartels as terrorists, ensure 24/7 eyes on the border, launch a Canada- U.S. Joint Strike Force to combat organized crime, fentanyl and money laundering. I have also signed a new intelligence directive on organized crime and fentanyl and we will be backing it with $200 million.”

According to a study by the Angus Reid Institute, a majority of Canadians don’t trust Donald Trump’s claim that he won’t use military force to annex Canada.
62% of Canadians say they don’t believe that Donald Trump wouldn’t use the U.S. military to force Canada to join the United States. Just 28% of Canadians believe Trump will keep his word regarding forced annexation by military means.
“Trump explicitly ruled out the use of military force to annex Canada, but left it on the table in his pursuit of Greenland and the Panama Canal. Perhaps that is why a majority of Canadians (62%) say they do not trust Trump to keep his word and not involve the military.”
The study also found that just 5% of Americans support Trump’s use of economic force to annex Canada.

The Angus Reid Institute conducted an online survey from Jan. 10 to 13, 2025 among a representative randomized sample of 1,653 Canadian adults who are members of Angus Reid Forum.

According to a study by the Angus Reid Institute, just 5% of Americans support Trump’s use of economic force to annex Canada. Donald Trump has announced that a 25% tariff on all Canadian goods entering the United States will take effect on Feb. 4.
The study found that 77% of Americans believe Canadians should get to choose whether or not Canada joins the United States. Just 5% say Canada should join the United States using economic or political pressure, while 1% say military force should be used to make it happen.
Overall, just 10% of Canadians and 25% of Americans think Canada should join the United States.
“This tepid support for Canada as 51st state is matched by little interest from Americans in forcing it to happen. Few (5%) support Trump’s promised use of “economic force” to annex Canada, while even fewer (1%) believe the U.S. should use its military to make it happen – something Trump has ruled out.”

The popularity of online casinos in Canada has skyrocketed over recent years, and this growth has shown no signs of slowing down. And it is easy to understand why people love these online platforms. Imagine hitting the jackpot without ever leaving the comfort of your couch! The thrill of spinning the reels or beating the dealer from home is hard to resist. However, while luck plays a big role, being informed and cautious is equally important. Choosing a reputable casino platform ensures your experience remains enjoyable, safe, and secure. But with so many online casino portals available, we understand that differentiating between a legitimate platform and a rogue operator is often easier said than done.
Of course, you can easily visit NoDeposit365 Canada, to get an idea of what a safe and secure online casino should offer. But it shouldn’t stop there, either. You also need to be ready to invest some time in researching the casinos yourself.
To make life a little easier for you, we’ve created a useful guide to help you navigate the world of Montreal online casinos like a pro.
Understanding the Online Casino Market in Canada
Canada’s online casino market is booming, and players in Montreal are spoiled for choice. Many of the best online casino platforms boast impressive game libraries, innovative interfaces, and enticing bonuses. However, what sets reputable online casinos apart from some of the more questionable operators is their commitment to player safety and protection.
You’ll find that all top-tier Canadian online casinos operate under licenses issued by respected regulatory bodies, such as the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA), UK Gambling Commission (UKGC), or Canada’s Kahnawake Gaming Commission. These licenses confirm that the casino complies with strict rules for fair play, data protection, and responsible gambling.
Additionally, these platforms partner with reputable software developers, offering high-quality games with fair odds and seamless gameplay. But how can you ensure you’re selecting the right online casino for your needs?
Choose a Safe and Secure Montreal Online Casino
Whether your game of choice is poker, roulette, or slots, online gambling can be a fun pursuit. Much of the lure of playing these games is the chance to win big. However, when you are transacting with potentially large sums of money, there is also the scope to fall prey to unscrupulous actors operating within the online gambling space. For this reason, picking a reputable online casino is essential when it comes to protecting your money and personal information. Whether you are new to the world of online casinos or you’re a bit of an old hand – here are our top tips to bear in mind when choosing a safe and secure online casino in Montreal.
1. Licensing and Regulation
As previously mentioned, always ensure that the online casino holds a valid license from a respected regulatory body like the MGA, UKGC, or Kahnawake Gaming Commission. These licenses guarantee the platform adheres to strict guidelines, ensuring fair gaming practices and secure transactions.
2. Reputation and Reviews
Don’t just rely on the casino’s marketing claims – as with businesses across the board, operators will tell you what you want to hear. Instead, use your initiative and research independent reviews and player feedback to get a clear picture of the casino’s trustworthiness. Look out for comments related to payout processing, the quality of customer support, and overall user experience.
3. Secure Payment Options
A good casino offers its clients a variety of secure payment options, such as credit cards, e-wallets, bank transfers and sometimes even cryptocurrency. Be sure to verify that the platform uses advanced encryption technology and has SSL certificates to safeguard your personal and financial information.
4. Transparent T&Cs
Whether you’ve been playing online slots for years or are a total novice at gambling it is important to carefully read the terms and conditions of any platform you are using for the first time. With the market being as saturated as it is, you’ll find that most operators offer a range of bonuses and promotions to entice players to choose their portal over that of their competitors. Reputable casinos are upfront about wagering requirements, withdrawal limits, and any fees associated with payouts. Taking the time to read the small print might feel arduous, but it is likely to save you from being disappointed further down the line.
5. Player Support
Reliable customer support is a hallmark of a trustworthy casino. A good platform will offer their clients multiple avenues for getting support. So check if the platform offers 24/7 assistance via live chat, email, or phone to resolve issues promptly. Moreover, search online forums for reviews of how good the customer support apparatus for a particular portal is in reality.
6. Test Their Games
Finally, with so many dynamic online casino platforms on offer, the world is your oyster so take your time to figure out which portal suits your requirements. You’ll find that most reputable online casinos offer free demos of their games or incentives such as no-deposit bonuses that allow you to test out their offerings. Take advantage of these to evaluate the quality and fairness of the platform before depositing any real money.
In short, it is evident that with so many options available to the consumer, finding the safest online casino in Montreal requires thorough research and careful consideration. Platforms adhering to licensing, security, and fairness standards ensure a stress-free gaming experience. Whether you’re into slots, blackjack, or live dealer games, be sure to prioritize safety and responsible gambling above all else.

The Quebec Anglophone Heritage Network (QAHN) is marking its 25th anniversary by turning the spotlight on the people and institutions that have preserved the province’s English-speaking heritage. The 2025 Heritage Talks series, organized by QAHN Digital Media Specialist Glenn Patterson, will showcase stories of dedicated individuals who built and sustained local museums, archives, and historical societies.
“The impetus for the series is it’s QAHN’s 25th anniversary,” Patterson explained in a Jan. 31 interview. “We are a network of members. The realization basically is that, as much as QAHN has its origin story, so does every other organization. Because we’re a network of members, we just wanted to put the spotlight on them. What are the stories of the people involved?”
This year’s lineup of talks highlights a range of preservation efforts, from military history to Irish heritage, Black community development, and grassroots conservation projects. The series is available via Zoom and Facebook Live, with some in-person events at heritage venues across Quebec.
Stories behind heritage institutions
One of the upcoming talks focuses on the Baie-des-Chaleurs Military Museum in New Richmond, presented by Executive Director Tom Eden. Eden will delve into the origins of the museum, its key exhibits, and how it preserves the military history of the Gaspé region. Patterson described the museum’s role, explaining how it highlights “local contributions to national defence, as well as the experiences of those who served.”
Another session will explore the story of Phoebe Hyde, a woman who envisioned turning her family’s ancestral home in Hudson into a museum. The Greenwood Centre for Living History now stands as a testament to her lifelong dedication. Historian Karen Molson will share Hyde’s story, drawing from personal anecdotes and archival research.

Quebec Premier François Legault has confirmed that no more American products will be sold at the SAQ as of Tuesday, Feb. 4. The move follows Donald Trump’s announcement that 25% tariffs will be placed on all Canadian goods entering the United States, along with a 10% tariff on Canadian energy.
Legault made the announcement earlier today, confirming that his government “will do everything possible to protect our economy and support our businesses and workers.”
Quebec Finance Minister Eric Girard also confirmed that additional retaliatory measures will follow.
The federal government announced on Saturday that it will move forward with 25% retaliatory tariffs on $155-billion worth of American goods.
