After two decades of bonding over their love of collecting cards and comics, Wishe Delisle and Jamie McComber have finally made their lifelong dream of opening a hobby shop a reality.
As of this Thursday, Astronomical Cards and Comics is officially in business at the Kanien’kehá:ka Plaza.
“I still have to pinch myself every now and again – this is really happening,” said Delisle, who’s been collecting Magic: The Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and Pokemon cards since his childhood.
Both friends will be selling their own collection of comics and cards at the store, Delisle said, in addition to toys, posters, and more.
Delisle said it was back in October that McComber gave him a call telling him to drive over to the plaza on Old Malone Highway. McComber’s boss at Club Rez had just purchased the building and was looking for someone to rent one of the storefronts there.
“He said, ‘What do you think of this place?’ and I said ‘No way.’ I couldn’t hold my tears back because that’s how much this means to me,” Delisle said. “I gave him a hug and I said ‘When do we start?’”
After some renovations, the two signed a lease for January.
“It was now or never, really,” said McComber, a longtime collector of comics and manga books. Amazing Spider-Man, Swamp Thing, various Detective Comics, Deadpool, and X-Men are among some of the titles in his extensive collection.
Growing up, he and Delisle always dreamed of having a place in town where they could play in card tournaments. Instead, they would have to convince their parents to drive them to Chateauguay, Saint Constant, or Montreal.
They’ll be hosting Magic, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and Pokemon tournaments at the shop on a weekly basis, McComber said. There will be snacks and soda for sale, too.
“You can sit there and play with your friends,” he said. “It’s just a nice place to relax.”
The two will continue working their day jobs in the meantime. McComber works as a manager at Club Rez, while Delisle works as a floor manager at a tobacco factory in town. They also both manage The Office Poker Club at Plaza 138.
Delisle said he’s been overwhelmed by all the support coming in since they announced the card and comic venture.
“I don’t even want to look at my Messenger app because the little red button that says unread has 127 messages. That gives you an idea of how much excitement this is bringing to the community,” he said.
“I still can’t believe it,” Delisle said. “It’s surreal to me still. It just makes me super happy. It’s hard to put into words how excited I am.”

I’m not going to tart it up for you fine, furry folks: February absolutely sucks. The constant spectrum of greys seems overpowering as it all too quickly shrouds us in pitch black as temperatures plummet to ridiculous depths.
Having said that, most of us have finally made a dent into credit card bills from the holidays and cabin fever starts poking us in the ribs. The second month of the year is when most Montrealers (who don’t snowboard) finally admit defeat and step away from binge-watching Netflix. To further entice you and drag you into the subzero temps is the always great Taverne Tour, which returns again this year and will absolutely take over a hefty chunk of the Plateau from Feb. 8 to 10. Although most of the truly sweet shows this month are happening under the Taverne Tour banner, there are still some pretty rad gigs off the beaten path to get you braving the bullshit that is the mid-winter blues.
On Friday, Feb. 9, Taverne Tour is on its sophomore night and really starts getting lit with a couple of barnstormers, starting off with Sub Pop’s sweet trio Sweeping Promises with Dana and Feeling Figures at Sala (4848 St-Laurent, show 8 p.m., $25). If you swoon for the croon you can’t go wrong with the sheer lung power of Promises’ lead bellower Lira Mondal.
On the flippity-flop of Friday night, la Tulipe is the swinging shindig where you can catch tried and true garage legend Jon Spencer, who will put the sweat on the walls with localizers Population II. If you think rock ‘n’ roll has relic’d, think again. (4530 Papineau, Feb. 9, show 8 p.m., $34.99). (If you were hoping to squeeze into le Ministère to catch one of our true local treasures, TEKE::TEKE with Pantayo and Samwoy, you are unfortunately fucked without a kiss as the gig is long sold out. Bummeroo!)
The final night for Taverne Tour slams shut, starting with the king of power pop Paul Collins’ Beat when he lets the Rickenbacker clang and shimmer with the rock ‘n’ roll swagger of Dangereens. This is all happening at l’Esco, so bring a tambourine (4461 St-Denis, Feb. 10, show 10 p.m., $25.17).
Local hypnotists Suuns will provide the hairpin turns and motorik groove at Sala with Activity and DahL (4848 St-Laurent, Feb. 10, show 8 p.m., $25). Second Ben Shemie gig in a week! Take that James Brown!!!
Finally, the band that I can’t believe is not immense yet, Pypy, will put the punk back into post-punk at le Ministère with Hot Garbage and Shunk. If I were you, I would grip tix as soon as you read this as this will definitely sell out. (4521 St-Laurent, Feb. 10, show 9 p.m., $25.17).
There is still plenty happening after the Taverne Tour pulls up stakes for another year, but if you were hoping to see Municipal Waste with the thrash-tastic Ghoul, Necrot and Dead Heat on Feb. 20 at the totally metal approved venue Foufounes, this thing sold out so long ago, you were still in short pants.
You should be excited to see Militarie Gun at Foufs on Feb. 17, but you should really be bursting at the seams to see Spiritual Cramp, who take up the sweat slot for that show. Be there early to watch them wipe the floor with the closer as support acts Pool Kids and Spaced look on stunned. 87 Ste-Catherine E., show 7:30 p.m., $30.20

Petit Alep
A long-standing and well-loved Syrian/Armenian restaurant by Georges and Jacqueline Frangié. Since the mid-’90s, the restaurant across from Jean-Talon Market has been known for its extensive menu of snack-sized Middle Eastern staples — think sumac-studded fattouche salad, crimson muhammara and fléflé flecked Armenian sausages. Aside from the food, Frangié’s wine cellar (which features over 250 references) has some of the rarest bottles (at excellent prices, I might add) in Montreal. (191 Jean-Talon E.)

Montreal, a city known for its dynamic arts scene and the love of a good game, has always been a playground for those seeking thrill and creativity. Under the city’s cobblestone streets and festival lights, a transformation has unfolded, merging the excitement of gaming with the convenience of online platforms. Within this digital realm, https://www.soft2bet.com/casino-and-sports-betting-solutions often steers the ship, guiding both newbies and seasoned bettors through the vibrant waters of online casino games and sports wagering.
Rolling the dice on entertainment: Montreal’s gaming spirit
The echoes of Montreal’s gaming roots haven’t faded; instead, they’ve found a new life online. It’s not just about playing a game—it’s about the experience, reimagined through sophisticated betting solutions. Observing the city’s residents as they embrace these platforms is a testament to their enduring love affair with games of chance and skill alike. These platforms are not just about trying one’s luck, they’re about crafting stories, earning virtual trophies, and experiencing the kind of camaraderie traditionally found in physical spaces like casinos or sports bars.
Painting the town red: the cultural catalyst for online gaming innovation
Imagine the rush of a high-stakes game infused with the artistry of Montreal’s cultural vibe. Online gaming innovation often draws from the rich tapestry of the city’s arts scene. Game developers are taking cues from local culture and introducing betting solutions that boast a narrative or a visual twist paying homage to the city’s heritage.
From the jazz-infused soundtracks to the aesthetically pleasing interfaces paying tribute to Montreal’s murals, these platforms are gateways not just to gambling but to cultural appreciation as well.
Sports mania meets virtual stakes: Montreal’s digital transformation in betting
For Montreal’s sports enthusiasts, the jump from stadium cheers to digital applause has been a seamless one. The digital transformation in sports betting has capitalized on the city’s fervent sports culture, with online platforms offering sophisticated betting solutions. These platforms provide an arena where fans aren’t just spectators but participants, allowing for an engaged, personal connection to the game, considerably elevating the excitement of every chancy puck or unforeseen touchdown.
Virtual mingling: local events as a gateway to global online gaming networks
Montreal’s well-known flair for festivals and cultural gatherings has found a parallel in the rise of global online gaming communities. Thanks to the intuitive betting solutions, gamers from the city are now competing with peers across continents, all from the comfort of their homes. These online arenas promote a spirit of camaraderie and competition that Montrealers know all too well from their local events, yet these virtual spaces allow for global reach, connecting the city’s unique vibe with a worldwide audience.
As we continue to revel in Montreal’s bustling culture, it’s clear that the city’s arts, sports, and gaming scenes no longer exist in silos. Whether it’s the spinning reels of a slot game or the strategic bets placed on a hockey match, the marriage of Montreal’s cultural appeal with online gaming and betting solutions is not just happening—it’s thriving, proving to be as engaging as the most captivating performances or the most exciting games we’ve ever played.

The concept of gaming has constantly evolved, the same as the skills associated with every video game. This is regardless of whether the game is physically played or online. However, while some skills may be innate, others are learned and constantly developed through practice while gaming and in reality. Also, since most of the video games we’ve had over the years are life-based, the social skills applied to understand them help in the real world.
It’s no secret that video games are wildly popular across the globe. According to CasinoAlpha, an estimated 2.8 billion people play video games worldwide, making the gaming market bigger than the film and music industries combined. With 90% of children in the US reporting that they play video games regularly and 74% of adults, games undoubtedly make up a significant chunk of our screen time.
Considering these insane numbers, you may wonder about the benefits of gaming and how valuable skills learned can translate to personal situations. Well, let’s find out in this article.
Cognitive and Interpersonal Skills Developed Through Play
Video games are usually classified into different genres based on the storyline’s development. Some examples of the latest genres include action, adventure, puzzle, RPG, play-to-earn and land strategy games.
As such, these different genres of video games are believed to require specific abilities to help players access their game’s technology. These specific abilities cannot be purchased, though, but are often formed as video games require time, consistency, study and learning.
A quick review of key mental abilities involved in gaming and interactions within multiplayer environments will include the following:
· Strategic thinking
· Leadership
· Problem-solving
· Decision-making
· Collaboration
· Good communication
Professional Applications and Benefits
As stated earlier, there are benefits and applications of gaming skills in our professional fields:
1. Leadership
Gaming communities have leaders who put their foot forward to teach and help fellow gamers grow daily. Such leadership positions soon become part of them and reflect on their professional lives.
2. Problem-solving
This represents a player’s ability to think and carry out quality decisions in a way that takes care of any activity at hand, a good skill, especially when individuals try to hone it in reality.
3. Collaboration
The art of collaboration is the process where teamwork is used as a tactic to perform a task or solve problems. The skill also increases data communication at a faster pace and has proven to be an effective tool in any job, company or organisation.
Navigating Gaps Between Virtual and Reality
Merging virtual and reality could be a difficult thing to accomplish seeing the visible gaps between the two phases. Hence, it doesn’t pay to compare both aspects,
First, the games are faster when it comes to pace, and players must be able to react within seconds or risk mistakes. In reality, thoughts are considered in depth as every decision has long-term effects.
The effects of actions in games are also easily reversible and may not apply to the player’s real life, whereas consequences in reality can affect a gamer’s next decade.
Lastly, there are communication gaps ranging from how game conversations share links to completing objectives and building assets. In reality, emotions are more expressed, and social relationships are prioritised.
Framework for Transferable Competency
The basic framework for transferring game skills to professional spheres is summarised into five best practices:
1. Identification of required skills
2. Set and define career goals
3. Strategize a personal plan for growth
4. Learn and apply lessons
5. Source mentorship
Future: Immersive Simulations and Mixed Reality
Statistics have said that by 2027, the value of augmented and virtual reality in the retail industry is estimated to be over $100 billion. This shows that game entertainment and the entire concept of virtual reality will blend more with real-life complexities. Now that you know how gaming skills can apply to reality, feel free to join the virtual ride for all-around efficiency.

The world of gambling has undergone a transformative shift in recent years, marked by the ascension of online casinos as a global phenomenon. With the advent of technology, traditional brick-and-mortar casinos are no longer the sole epicenter of high-stakes entertainment. Instead, a new wave of gaming enthusiasts has embraced the convenience and accessibility offered by online platforms. This article delves into the multifaceted reasons behind the rise of online casinos and explores the global impact of this rapidly growing industry.
The Convenience Factor
One of the primary drivers behind the surge in online casinos’ popularity is the unparalleled convenience they provide to players. Gone are the days when gambling enthusiasts had to plan elaborate trips to Las Vegas or Monte Carlo for a taste of the casino experience. Today, anyone with an internet connection can access a myriad of virtual casinos from the comfort of their own homes. The convenience of playing from a laptop or mobile device has democratized the gambling experience, allowing players to indulge in their favorite games without the constraints of time and location.
Variety of Games and Innovative Features
Online casinos offer an extensive array of games, far beyond what traditional casinos can accommodate. The digital landscape allows for an ever-expanding library of games, from classic table games like poker and blackjack to innovative slot machines and live dealer experiences. The diversity in gaming options caters to a broad audience, ensuring that players of all preferences find something that suits their taste. Additionally, the integration of cutting-edge technology has given rise to features like live streaming, virtual reality, and interactive elements, further enhancing the overall gaming experience.
Bonuses and Promotions
In the fiercely competitive online casino industry, operators strive to attract and retain players by offering enticing bonuses and promotions. These incentives serve as a powerful magnet, drawing in both seasoned gamblers and novices alike. From welcome bonuses upon registration to ongoing promotions for loyal players, the range of perks is vast. Some online platforms even offer a bonus promo day, as can be seen on www.balitourismboard.org, along with other sites. This strategic approach not only enhances the player’s bankroll but also fosters a sense of loyalty and engagement within the online casino community.
Global Accessibility and Cross-Cultural Appeal
The rise of online casinos transcends geographical boundaries, making gambling a truly global phenomenon. Players from different corners of the world can connect and engage in games, creating a diverse and dynamic virtual gaming environment. The cross-cultural appeal of online casinos introduces players to different gaming styles, strategies, and cultural nuances. This global accessibility not only contributes to the industry’s growth but also fosters a sense of camaraderie among players with shared interests, regardless of their geographic locations.
Regulatory Advancements and Security Measures
The legitimacy and security of online casinos have been a significant concern for players since their inception. However, advancements in regulatory frameworks and security measures have bolstered the industry’s credibility. Licensing authorities and regulatory bodies ensure that online casinos adhere to strict standards, promoting fair play and responsible gambling. The implementation of sophisticated encryption technologies provides a secure environment for financial transactions, instilling confidence in players to participate in online gambling without fear of fraud or data breaches.
The rise of online casinos as a global phenomenon is a testament to the ever-evolving landscape of the gaming industry. The global community of online gamblers, bound by their shared passion, represents a diverse and thriving ecosystem that highlights the enduring appeal of this digital revolution in the world of gambling.

Local wrestlers put on a performance to remember at Howard S. Billings High School this Wednesday for the first wrestling meet of the Greater Montreal Athletic Association (GMAA) season.
“I feel like the team is really getting better because we have all these amazing coaches now, way more than we had before, so I think it’s good,” said Kahnawake Survival School (KSS) wrestler Tiohahison Splicer, who has been wrestling for five years.
The KSS girls’ team ended up in second-place after the meet, with the boys’ team in fifth place for the boys’ division ahead of the GMAA all-star meet scheduled for next week.
“It’s pretty good. I’m getting back into it. I was a bit anxious before I came in, but I’m getting into it now, and I’m excited for my next matches,” said Teiokeraonhatie Horn, who wrestled with the KSS boys’ team.
“Before you get on the mat, you’re anxious or scared, but when you get on the mat and you’re wrestling, everything starts coming up and it gets fun after a while. It’s a really competitive thing.”
Grade eight KSS wrestler Lia Bear spoke to The Eastern Door after winning her first match 2-1.
“After my match, I was kind of surprised, because I didn’t expect to win it and I ended up winning, so I felt great about it,” she said.
“I hope for me and my team to have a great year. It doesn’t matter if we win or not, it just matters that we have fun doing it.”
KSS wrestling coach Brandon Stalk said the meet was an excellent opportunity to identify areas of growth for the team.
“There were a couple of matches where I think we could have won, but any small mistake in wrestling can cost them a match,” he said. “We just need to address those things in practice, but I’m happy with everyone’s performance today. Everyone wrestled hard, nobody gave up, good attitudes – that’s all I can really ask for.”
Stalk added that every meet is a learning experience.
“You learn a lot more from a loss than you do from winning a sport,” he said. “Every team here is going to take wins and losses, and we’re all going to get better from it.”
Billings took first place in the standings for both the boys’ and girls’ South Shore divisions. In the girls’ division, KSS took second, Massey Vanier High School third, École Secondaire P.G. Ostiguy (ESPGO) fourth, and Heritage Regional High School fifth. In the boys division, ESPGO came second, Heritage took third, Massey Vanier took fourth, and KSS took fifth.
Billings coach Peter Montour said all wrestled well, and that the meet saw some of the toughest wrestlers the GMAA has to offer.
“If you missed it, you missed a show,” he said.
“We’re very proud of all of our wrestlers, the student body and staff of Billings pulling this event off at the last minute.”
The All-Star meet will start at 1 p.m. next Thursday at John Rennie High School.

The QCT honours Pierre Asselin (1955-2024)
Shirley Nadeau
The QCT was saddened to learn that Pierre Asselin, a journalist with Le Soleil for over 30 years, died Jan. 29 at age 69. He was the husband of Cathy Nolan, the executive director of the Quebec City Reading Council.
Throughout his career with Le Soleil, Asselin was also very active in the English- speaking community. He wrote an article about the “Information Age” for the QCT 250th- anniversary special edition in June 2014.
“Pierre championed the anglophone community,” Nolan told the QCT. “One of his most memorable journalistic moments was that he was the journalist to get the Shannon [tainted water] story out and spent months working with residents, the lawyer and other professionals to make sure the story got the attention it deserved.
“Throughout his life, Pierre was a big supporter of people no matter their stature in the community,” Nolan said. “He would buy chocolate bars from kids who came selling them at the house to raise money for school trips, et cetera; pens and Boy Scout calendars were bought. He was a true supporter of any local cause. He and I were and are strong support- ers of Doctors without Borders and the Community Christmas Hamper Campaign. He had a passion for recreational cycling and would think nothing of hopping on his bike with a tent and heading off to the Townships or Mont-Tremblant for a bike ride.
“He knew Karen Macdonald [owner and editor of the QCT from 1993 to 2007] very well. They worked the city beat on many common stories when she [and her husband François Vézina] lived in Quebec City. He also worked with former QCT journalist Bethann Merkle and wrote an article … when she was co-ordinating the 250th-anniversary celebra- tions for the newspaper.
“I believe he started his career at Le Soleil in 1980, initially based in La Pocatière, before moving to the city a few years later,” added Nolan.
The Asselin family will receive visitors at the Maison Gomin, 2026 Boul. René- Lévesque Ouest, on Feb. 8 from 1 to 3 p.m.

COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS HAMPER CAMPAIGN: THANK YOU to the volunteers, donors, sponsors and community organizations who made the 28th Community Christmas Hamper Campaign a success!
Submitted by Rev. Katherine Burgess, member of the CCHC Organizing Committee
And just like that, the 28th Community Christmas Hamper Campaign (CCHC) has drawn to a close. Thanks to the dedicated volunteers who gave so much time to this initiative. This year, over 160 people volunteered a total of 407 hours, which must be a new record. Members of the organizing committee are included among these volunteers, but we must also thank the staff of Jeffery Hale Community Partners (JHCP) and Voice of English-speaking Québec (VEQ) who are invaluable to the success of the campaign. Other notable volunteers included Canada Post employees who gave their time on Dec. 16 to ensure that all hampers were safely delivered. Many individuals and families also came out on Delivery Day to help load and deliver hampers.
This past December was the first time since the pandemic that the committee decided to collect food again. We would like to thank all who donated non-perishable food items – especially the schools that challenged students to bring in specific items each week.
Since we must purchase many items for the hampers, several fundraisers were held again this year. These included VEQ and the Morrin Centre’s joint Holiday Happy Hour, which is always a success. VEQ also ran their “Oh, Deer!” Holiday Dares challenge again, and JHCP held “Ugly Christmas Sweater Tuesdays” at the Wellness Centre. Pictures of these initiatives are on the CCHC Facebook page. The RISE program sold Fun Jars Cookie Mix. There were jewelry sales and a spaghetti sauce cook- off at Saint Brigid’s Home, while CEGEP Champlain-St. Lawrence sold hydroponically grown lettuce and herbs as their contribution.
We also thank our invaluable corporate sponsors: Bo-Fruits, Canada Post, Construction Dinamo Inc., IGA Marché Pou- lin and Nutri-Œuf Ovale Eggs (Saint-Lambert-de-Lauzon).
Every campaign has its challenges, and this year was no exception. The shutdown of the schools – including the Eastern Québec Learning Centre where the hampers are normally as- sembled – due to the strike in the public sector presented us with something to overcome. We pivoted quickly and moved everything to the Wellness Centre in the Jeffery Hale Pavilion. We extend a huge thank you to everyone who adapted to this last-minute change, allowing us to deliver goodness to some 250 households this year.
Another repercussion of the school closures was the postponement of the “Pound® for a Claus!” fundraising event organized by Vivian Yatabe. Don’t miss this dynamic Pound® drum-playing cardio workout that will be held Feb. 18 at 1 p.m. at Quebec High School. All proceeds go to the CCHC. To register, visit eventbrite.ca/e/801783846067.
In closing, thank you to each person who supports the CCHC with food or monetary donations or volunteer hours. You are all vital to the success of this heartwarming collective community initiative, and it is comforting to know that we can count on you every year.
