As the United States eyes Canada’s natural resources, many of those resources are tied to lands that directly impact Indigenous communities. In Quebec, the Assembly of First Nations Quebec-Labrador (AFNQL) is urging the provincial government to ensure that First Nations governments are consistently consulted in shaping a response strategy to U.S. tariffs. Regional chief Ghislain Picard says Indigenous leadership must have a seat at the table when it comes to making crucial economic decisions.

Local Journalism Initiative
Residents voiced concerns over road conditions, zoning regulations, and local infrastructure projects during the Feb. 10 Stanstead town council meeting, presided over by Mayor Jody Stone at the town hall. With just over ten residents in attendance, the question periods saw discussions on road access, tourism signage, and a controversial zoning issue that could impact a local business.
Road restrictions and infrastructure
One of the first questions of the evening came from a resident of Maple Street, who pressed council on the continued restrictions against truck traffic and the deteriorating condition of the road. “Are you finally going to remove the ‘No Truck’ restriction and pave the road?” the resident asked, highlighting that the asphalt had lasted for 58 years before its recent removal.
Mayor Stone acknowledged that the restriction was still in place according to provincial regulations. “If we want to lift it, we need to apply to the Ministry of Transport,” he explained, adding that the town would need to consider the possible negative impact of increased truck traffic on the neighbourhood. The resident argued that only a small number of trucks currently use the road, to which Stone responded, “We’ll continue looking into it.”
Another resident raised concerns about tourism visibility, pointing out that government effort had been invested in a nearby building without providing space for local signage. “If people don’t stop on their way down, they should at least see something on their way back,” he said, also advocating for designated space for Stanstead tourism material. Stone suggested that if a suitable location were available, it might be open to discussion.
Zoning issues threaten local gym
A particularly pressing matter was raised by the owner of a recently reopened gym in Stanstead. She expressed concern that due to zoning restrictions, she might be forced to close at the end of the month. “I don’t want to have to shut down,” she said, emphasizing the gym’s importance for both physical and mental health in the community. She also noted that she had collected nearly 300 signatures in support of keeping the gym open.
Director General Hughes Ménard explained that the issue stemmed from the gym operating in an accessory building, which is not permitted under current zoning laws. “We are very sensitive to this situation and want to help find a solution,” he said. Council members suggested that she submit a request for a zoning modification but cautioned that it would be a lengthy process.
“In the meantime, we need to make sure the building meets safety regulations, like having a bathroom,” Stone added. The gym owner questioned why a minor exemption wasn’t possible, but council clarified that the issue extended beyond a simple variance. “It’s a zoning question, and it opens the door to broader changes,” Stone said, encouraging further discussions to explore solutions.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Dear Canada,
I am one of the 75 million Americans who voted for Kamala Harris for president last November. I’m writing to express my dismay and solidarity as we all endure the actions of the new administration.
The president and his allies seem to believe their victory was a mandate for the divisive rhetoric of the campaign. Unfortunately, we are learning that it was not just rhetoric. Even more concerning, the checks and balances meant to safeguard our democracy are eroding as this administration pressures legislators and undermines judicial independence.
The recently imposed trade tariffs on Canada are not only shortsighted but also a betrayal of a strong friendship. They will do nothing but harm hardworking Canadians and Americans alike. As a resident of Maine and a frequent visitor to Old Québec and the Maritimes, I find this especially disheartening. I am embarrassed and ashamed of how the leaders I did not choose are treating your country and others. Even more frustrating is the reality that an estimated 89 million Americans of voting age did not participate in the election — potentially shaping a different outcome had they done so.
I hope you recognize that 75 million of us voted for Ms. Harris to uphold freedom of thought, encourage tolerance and defend personal autonomy from government overreach.
I recently heard that Prime Minister Trudeau suggested Canadians refrain from visiting the U.S. in response to these tariffs. I can’t blame him. Yet, I still long to visit your beautiful country. I hope that when I do, you will see me not as an extension of my government, but as an individual who values our shared history and friendship. Maybe we can come up with a special handshake or greeting to recognize kindred spirits across the border.
Looking forward to my next visit – here’s hoping for a warm welcome.
Sincerely,
Tracy Scheckel
Ellsworth, Maine

SHEDquarters provides safe space for men who are caregivers
Submitted by Bill Cox*
Élise Arsenault, a master’s student in social work at Université Laval, has introduced the SHEDquarters as part of her academic work. It is a pilot project for English-speaking men in Quebec City who are caring for (or have cared for) a loved one.
A group of interested men at McGreevy Manor have joined the casual get-togethers twice a month, taking the opportunity to share skills, learn new hobbies, connect with other men who can relate to what they’re going through and find a supportive environment to help others while helping themselves along the way.
They have already been active with the building and painting of miniature wood Christmas trees that were sold to benefit Saint Brigid’s Guild. A morning was spent helping load boxes for the Quebec Community Christmas Hamper Campaign, and on Jan. 17, members visited Fire Station #15 on Avenue Maguire.
Élise Arsenault is very active with the group and the McGreevy men appreciate her efforts on their behalf.
*The writer is a former QCT columnist and a member of the SHEDQuarters program at McGreevy Manor.

Don’t ever let a politician tell you who you can’t boo.
François Legault, who’s made a political career out of Quebec nationalism and supporting freedom of expression against “Le Wokeisme,” wanted Habs fans to be “respectful” of the Americans.
My guess is Legault thinks there’s a chance of reviving the Nordiques and doesn’t want to piss off Gary Bettman.
Booing the American anthem is literally the least you can do right now. It is your constitutional right.
Is it disrespectful? Sure. So is threatening annexation.
Hearing their anthem booed might convince the Americans to get rid of their asshole president.

More about books you should read, and the authors who wrote them, that were recently featured on the Weird Era podcast, by co-hosts Sruti Islam and Alex Nierenhausen.
NOTE: Weird Era Season 9 launches in March 2025! This article is a special overview of what the team read over the holidays.
Wicked by Gregory Maguire
With Wicked being one of last year’s biggest blockbusters, I felt a revisit of the 1995 novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, would be appropriate over the holidays. I first read the novel in my early teens and enjoy a re-read every few years… if only to escape to an intellectual property I adore in Oz. But Maguire’s Wicked is not the poppy, pink and green, whimsical romp you might recognize. His Oz is gritty and deeply political: corruption, assassinations, religious fervour and political intrigue occur on any given page. Elphaba, the titular Witch of the West, and Glinda’s friendship (central to the musical version) exists, yes, but it affects their lives in different, more nuanced ways, with complexities that delve far deeper than the musical showcases. A perfect read for anyone who wants to dive into the lore a little deeper before Wicked part 2 (Wicked: For Good) releases later this year. (AN)
Owlish by Dorothy Tse
This is a 2023 House of Anansi release that somehow slipped under my radar. A Chinese translation — this book is undeniably bizarre, intellectually charged, provocatively sensual and utterly propulsive. The narrative follows a morally ambiguous professor whose years of tepid devotion to his career and quiet subservience to his wife take a strange turn when he becomes captivated by a ballerina figurine. But is she merely a doll, or, through the cryptic guidance of his potentially deviously deceiving companion Owlish, a tangible catalyst for Professor Q to rediscover a sense of vitality? Set in a fantastical, post-colonial state, this novel explores the delicate spaces between despair and yearning, where Tse masterfully illuminates glimpses of unexpected hope. It was fun. (SI)
Can the Monster Speak by Paul B. Preciado
In November 2019, Paul Preciado spoke at the École de la Cause freudienne’s annual conference in Paris, addressing 3,500 psychoanalysts who had long considered him “mentally ill” due to his transgender identity. Drawing on Kafka’s “Report to an Academy,” in which a monkey argues that human subjectivity is like a cage, Preciado critiqued the outdated frameworks within psychoanalysis. He highlighted how psychological norms, shaped by context, have often been dictated by patriarchal and western-centric views. Preciado contends that the colonial-era concept of sexual difference no longer holds relevance, as technological advances now allow us to alter our bodies and reproduce in new ways. He calls for a necessary update to the field, challenging its traditional foundations. (SI)

Local Journalism Initiative
A new plumbing and heating program is now available in Estrie thanks to a collaboration between the Lennoxville Vocational Training Centre (LVTC) and the Centre de formation professionnelle 24-Juin. The program, which officially launched in the spring of 2024, was made possible through the Government of Quebec’s Offensive formation en Construction initiative and is now being delivered in newly inaugurated facilities at LVTC.
According to LVTC Director Diane Lavers in a Feb. 10 interview, the project stemmed from discussions with Éric Arseneault, Director of the Centre de formation professionnelle 24-Juin, about addressing a gap in vocational training. “We threw the idea in the air that we would like to both give plumbing in the region,” Lavers said. Initially, the program was set to be delivered at 24-Juin, but space constraints led to its relocation to LVTC, where room was available due to the downsizing of another program.
The new facilities feature a two-level structure designed to simulate real-world plumbing installations. “They have to install a complete bathroom upstairs, bring down the piping downstairs, and even shovel the gravel,” Lavers explained. This hands-on approach ensures that students gain practical experience in a realistic setting.
The initiative was heavily supported by funding from the provincial government. “All of the money that was invested by the Minister of Education for that project allowed us to be funded for the materials we needed, the extension, and the new interior arrangements,” Lavers noted.
The first cohort of students, which includes groups from both LVTC and 24-Juin, began their training in March and April 2024 and is expected to graduate in December 2025. The program is jointly staffed by four teachers hired by both school boards, allowing for flexibility and collaboration. “Sometimes, they mix and mingle throughout the shop,” Lavers said, adding that this model aligns with the Eastern Townships School Board’s commitment to a bilingual learning environment.
