Liberal Opposition Leader Hal Perry says Health PEI’s announcement increasing the maximum daily room rate in public long-term care homes by almost $5,000.00 per year is unreasonable.  Perry says the announcement comes at a time when families are already grappling with fixed incomes and the rising costs of essential needs, and when the healthcare system is already under immense pressure.  He says it’s unfair to burden seniors and families with additional financial strain right now.  Perry is calling   on government to consider a phased-in approach for the increase.

On Tuesday, Premier Dennis King issued a statement marking Emancipation Day yesterday.  King says it’s an important day to recognize the strength and perseverance of Black communities.  In 1833, the British Empire introduced the Slavery Abolition Act and on August 1, 1834, slavery was abolished.   The Premier says it’s important to acknowledge that slavery was present in Atlantic Canada, including PEI. The Bog was a neighbourhood in Charlottetown settled by Black slaves in the early 19th century.  In recognition of Emancipation Day, The Black Cultural Society of PEI held a celebration event in Rochford Square, formerly the Bog, on Tuesday night.

Early Sunday night, at about 6:30pm, Kings District RCMP received a report of an incident involving the pointing of a firearm at a person in Murray River. Police responded to the area, set up containment on the property and ensured there was no one else at the home, and then began several hours of negotiation with a 62 year-old man.  At about midnight, the man surrendered to police without incident.   He’s facing threats and firearm related charges. A loaded prohibited revolver was seized by police. Police say that as the situation was contained by officers and there was no threat to the greater public, no Alert was issued at the time of the incident.

The maximum daily room rate in public long-term-care homes and manors is changing from $92.19 to $105.78 per day, to align with private long-term-care rates.  The change takes effect August 1 for new residents entering long-term care. Current residents will see the rate change on October 1st to allow time to adjust to the new rate. Individuals can use that time to apply to the Subsidization Program if their income does not cover the new rate.  Eighty five percent of Manor residents are already covered by the Long-Term-Care Subsidization Program and will not be affected by the rate change. All current residents who are affected have been notified directly.

The province says amendments to the Building Codes Act Regulations will help reduce wait times for building permits and support increased development.  The amendments are to allow for the creation of intern level building officials in the province with the authority to review and approve smaller-scale building projects such as single-story accessory buildings and decks.  Officials say that will reduce the workload of the province’s building officials allowing them to focus efforts on large-scale projects suited to their training and experience.  Government has committed to reducing wait times for building permits to less than 30 days; further amendments are expected to assist in meeting this goal.

Dr. Michael Gardam has submitted his resignation as Health PEI CEO effective March of 2024.  Dr. Gardam sent a letter to all Health PEI staff Monday morning to notify them of his decision.  In that letter, Dr. Gardam says he gave notice to the Health PEI Board of Directors on Friday, and makes it clear that he is leaving for personal reasons – including being closer to his family.  Dr. Gardam says that for the next nine months, his plan is to continue just as he has since he started in 2020 – making changes to the system to support staff, and building resilient healthcare services for Islanders.  As for work still to be done, Dr. Gardam points to looking at the physicians’ master agreement to make being a family physician on PEI more attractive and sustainable. He also says they need to find and/or build spaces for staff to provide services; and recruit many, many people and integrate new professionals such as physician assistants, midwives, and associate physicians.
