Physicians and Nurse Practitioners in PEI can now more easily access specialists in Nova Scotia to discuss patient care through an expansion of the Virtual Hallway online consultation platform. Officials say this will potentially reduce the need for out-of-province travel.
Since the platform launched in early May, primary care providers in the province have been able to consult virtually with Island specialists only. With the platform’s expansion last week, Island primary care providers currently have access to approximately 50 Nova Scotia specialists across various specialty areas of medicine. There are currently 121 registered users from PEI on Virtual Hallway, including 93 primary care providers and 28 specialists. With the expansion to Nova Scotia-based specialists, those numbers are expected to increase.

Statistics Canada says employment rose in Prince Edward Island by 1,500 in July, partly offsetting losses in June. The unemployment rate in the province was little changed at 8.1%. Nationally, employment was little changed last month as the economy lost a modest 6,400 jobs. Meanwhile, the country’s unemployment rate ticked up to 5.5 per cent amid population growth. July marks the third consecutive month that the unemployment rate has risen, signalling some loosening in the labour market. Rising unemployment comes as high interest rates weigh on the economy, making borrowing more expensive for both businesses and consumers.

CUPE PEI says it is deeply concerned about the recent announcement made by Health P.E.I. regarding new increases in daily room rates of public long-term care homes. The maximum daily rate for residents in care homes will be increasing from $92.19 to $105.78 per day, matching the higher private sector rates. CUPE PEI President Ashley Clark says the idea of increasing rates in the public system, as so to match the private sector is a step backwards for families and a leap towards privatization in healthcare.
