The federal and provincial governments plan to spend 46-million dollars to support the Island’s agriculture industry. Federal Agriculture Minister and Cardigan MP Lawrence MacAulay made the announcement today with provincial Agriculture Minister Bloyce Thompson, saying the money will come from the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership — a 3.5-billion dollar, five-year agreement between the federal, provincial and territorial governments.  Among other things, the cost-shared program will be used to encourage the development of land management practices for establishing perennial crops that help build resiliency in soils and reduce erosion.  As well, it will help support the development of the livestock industry.

We’re watching the progress of Hurricane Lee for the next few days.

PEI Stormchaser says the powerful hurricane could affect our weather by next weekend but it’s too early tp tell just how much, if any.

The Canadian Hurricane Centre in Dartmouth says it’s too early to see how the track northward will affect the Maritimes.

By combining multiple computer-generated forecasts, meteorologists have produced maps of the western Atlantic Ocean that suggest the powerful storm could slam into the Maritimes late next week.

But Chris Fogarty, program manager at the Canadian Hurricane Centre in Halifax, says these long-range models are of little value at this stage.

Fogarty pointed to the path recently taken by hurricane Franklin, where models also indicated it would head toward Atlantic Canada, but its actual track took the storm out to sea long before it came close to Canadian waters.

Still you should prepare this week with a 72-hour kit of emergency supplies including food and water and take in lawn furniture should a weather alert occur in the coming days.

It’s back to school Thursday for most K-12 students in PEI, although some will start Friday to allow for orientation for certain grades. Police offer a reminder to motorists that with the return to school, there will be increased traffic with parents dropping off or picking up students, and school buses back on the roads.  Police across the island will have stepped-up patrols, especially keeping an eye on school zones and school bus routes.  Police ask that drivers watch for flashing lights on school buses and slow down in school zones.  They also ask students to be aware of traffic if they’re walking to or from school.

The province says students across the province will benefit from greater access to programs, staff resources and renewed curriculum this school year.  Staffing for schools across the province has increased by 159 Full Time Equivalent frontline positions – including 59 teachers, 92 educational assistants, 2 Speech Language Pathologists, 3 school counsellors, and 2 bus drivers.
