A 52-year-old man has died after two vehicles crashed Sunday evening in Murray Harbour, P.E.I.

One person has died after a two-vehicle collision in Murray Harbour.  On Sunday at about 5:45 p.m. Kings District RCMP responded to the collision on Main Street in Murray Harbour. A 52-year-old man, who was a driver in one of the vehicles, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and transported to hospital.   An RCMP collision reconstructionist and the PEI Coroner’s office are assisting with the ongoing investigation.  The Murray Harbour Fire Department, Murray River Fire Department and Island EMS also responded to the scene.

There’s a new program that allows Islanders to propose a name for a location, or to rename a location in PEI.

It’s the PEI Geographic Naming and Renaming Program.  Islanders can submit proposals for adding a name where none currently exists; removing a name no longer used; changing an existing name; or modifying a name because of  an error like a misspelling or a duplication. 

All naming proposals must show thoughtful research, public engagement, and local support from the community and Indigenous representatives. 

The 2023 recipients of the Order of Prince Edward Island will be honoured at a special investiture ceremony at Government House on Wednesday morning.  Lieutenant Governor Antoinette Perry will confer the honour on Sister Teresa Currie of Charlottetown; Mary Hughes of Stratford; and Scott Parsons of Charlottetown. The three were selected from a total of 48 Islanders nominated to receive the award this year.

This week, Canadian and International tour operators, along with tourism providers from Atlantic Canada, are converging on Charlottetown for Atlantic Canada Showcase.  Atlantic Canada Showcase is where 120-plus tourism providers connect with 60-plus Canadian & International Tour Operators every two years, rotating amongst the four Atlantic Canadian Provinces, with this year’s event in Prince Edward Island.  The event is tailored for the travel industry, featuring business to business meetings, networking, and education for boosting visitation to Atlantic Canada.

Sunday was Treaty Day, a day to celebrate the ongoing relationship between the PEI Mi’kmaq and Island residents and the province’s commitment to advancing reconciliation.   To celebrate Treaty Day and mark the beginning of Mi’kmaq History Month, the Chiefs of the Mi’kmaq First Nations joined Premier Dennis King at the provincial administration building courtyard to raise the Mi’kmaq Grand Council flag, which will fly for the month of October. The provincial government says it’s committed to working with the PEI Mi’kmaq and recently signed a historic agreement with PEI First Nations for a housing project in Hillsborough Park, Charlottetown. Government will also be rolling out mandatory online reconciliation training for all new public sector employees.

Premier Dennis King is among those to offer condolences and pay tribute to former MLA Eric Hammill, who passed away Thursday in Summerside at the age of 91.  King says Hammill’s life was rooted in family, farming and community development — operating their mixed-family farm for many decades, growing potatoes and raising cattle. He served for many years as Secretary Manager of the Federation of Agriculture helping to promote the School Milk Program, community farmers markets, farm health and safety programs, and agriculture in the school system. He also was an active leader in the 4-H movement on PEI for more than a quarter century. He was inducted into the Atlantic Agricultural Hall of Fame in 2000.

Eric Hammill  was elected as the MLA for Borden-Kinkora in 1996, and was re-elected in 2000. He served as Minister of Agriculture and Forestry in the government of Premier Pat Binns.   

Four people have been arrested and are facing charges in connection with a fire in June at a Reads Corner Motel in Summerside.  The fire was said to be the result of arson. The Summerside Police Major Crime Unit has been heading the investigation. On Thursday, police executed warrants at four different homes in Summerside where the suspects were located and taken into custody.  

A 34-year old man has been charged with arson with disregard for human life, arson causing damage to property and possession of an incendiary device. He’s been remanded into custody until October 3rd.

The three remaining suspects were released and will be appearing in court to answer to charges.

The PEI minimum wage is rising to $15 an hour, effective Sunday.  That’s up from $14.50 an hour.

Maritime Electric rates are going up 2.1 percent to begin October due to unexpected shutdowns at Point Lepreau in New Brunswick and its nuclear power plant that produces electricity. It will cost the average residential user $27 more per year until the end of February, 2026.

It’s the 14th year for the event presented by the Potato Growers of PEI.

Premier Dennis King invited the chiefs of the Mi’kmaq First Nations, Indigenous community members and the public to the provincial administration building yesterday to acknowledge Truth and Reconciliation Day.

The ceremony began with a short reflection followed by a lowering of the flags to honour the lives of Indigenous Peoples affected by the residential school system.

After sundown, the building was lit in orange to recognize the day.

King says meaningful reconciliation can only be achieved through learning about the history of residential schools, listening to the stories of survivors, and acknowledging ongoing impacts of the discrimination.

Courses meant to cut down on sexual violence are now mandatory for students at UPEI and Holland College.

National Day of Truth and Reconciliation Day was recognized on Prince Edward Island on Saturday.

P.E.I.'s minimum wage will be going up to $15 an hour on Sunday, but social advocates say the increase doesn't go far enough for people in the throes of poverty.

The new naming process applies only to unincorporated areas of Prince Edward Island and not municipalities that have their own councils to consider requests.

Egmont MP Bobby Morrissey has announced $19-million in federal funding for a $47.6-project being proposed by Maritime Electric.  That project would see Maritime Electric replace all of its customers’ current meters with smart meters.  Officials say that with those smart meters, crews will be able to more quickly detect potential power outages so that power is restored more efficiently; and produce better usage data which will make electricity bills more predictable. The project is expected to create over 100 new jobs, reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80 tonnes annually.   The project does require the approval of the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission.

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the day Hurricane Juan made landfall west of Halifax with winds of more than 170 kilometres per hour.  Of course, it continued on toi PEI, causing some significant damage and power outages.  The storm killed eight people and caused 192-million dollars in insurable damage.  For PEI, it brought heavy rain and 140-km/h winds, downing trees, ripping apart barns and other buildings, and sinking boats.

Charlottetown M-P Sean Casey says he wants to be the next Parliamentary Speaker following the resignation of Anthony Rota earlier this week.
Casey said Thursday that there has never been a Speaker from PEI, and he hopes to make Islanders proud if his bid is successful in the October 3rd election.
The Speaker presides over debate and enforces the rules of the House of Commons.
Rota resigned after backlash to his office’s invitation to a Ukrainian Nazi veteran during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s address to Parliament on Friday.

The P.E.I. government says changes that could make paid sick days a reality for more Island workers won't happen until spring 2024 at the earliest.

As Sunday marked the one-year anniversary of post-tropical storm Fiona hitting PEI, it was announced on the weekend that communities can access up to nine million dollars in federal funding to help bolster facilities that can offer refuge to residents.
The Federal Rural Economic Development Minister says the money will help designated facilities purchase such things as power generators, satellite phones, blankets and cots, and make necessary improvements to serve the public.
Applications received by November 17th will be given priority consideration in funding through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.
Eligible areas include PEI; the Magdalen Islands; and Nova Scotia’s Pictou, Antigonish, Guysborough, Cumberland and Colchester Counties.

It’s an opportunity each year to formally express appreciation for the dedication of police and peace officers who made the ultimate tragic sacrifice to keep communities safe. 

A P.E.I. company that just launched a new hybrid lobster boat is applauding a new report promoting incentives and targets for electrifying marine vessels. AKA Energy Systems is hoping to follow up on its hybrid vessel with an all-electric boat within the next year.

Police in Prince Edward Island remembered fellow officers who died on the job during a memorial ceremony Sunday in Charlottetown.

Work to replace the bridge deck on the Bonshaw Bridge on the Trans-Canada Highway is scheduled to begin Monday.

Barriers will be in place to divert traffic around the work zone. Traffic is expected to be maintained. Motorists are asked to obey signs and slow down.

Traffic control personnel will be on site during construction. Electronic signs will also be in place to control traffic flow and warn oncoming vehicles of the work ahead. 

Work is expected to wrap up on the Bonshaw Bridge in early December.

Passmore Street in Charlottetown will become a one-way street on Tuesday.

This comes as part of the street’s reconstruction project that has been going on during the summer.

Passmore will go from a two-way to one-way street with traffic heading east from Queen Street toward University.

Construction to replace a drainage culvert on Middleton Road begins Monday on Route 111 in Searletown.

Route 111 will be closed with only local traffic allowed during the project which should be complete by November 3rd.
