Air traffic experts on both sides of the border are expressing amazement that there were apparently no fatalities in a Delta plane crash at approximately 2:13 this afternoon at Toronto Pearson Airport. Nine people out of the approximately 80 aboard were injured, according to the New York Times, including one in critical but non-life-threatening condition who was airlifted to a trauma center, according to Lawrence Saindon, a supervisor with the Peel Regional Paramedic Services. One pediatric patient was also in critical but non-life-threatening condition. The remaining seven who were injured were transported to hospitals with minor-to-moderate injuries.
The Bombardier Regional Jet from Minneapolis crashed on landing, flipped over onto its roof and started to burn. The fire was quickly extinguished and passengers made their way off the plane. Toronto Pearson placed a hold on landings and takeoffs and some of the flights were diverted to Hamilton International. A Hamilton Airport spokesperson responded to the Bay Observer stating, “Hamilton International is currently accepting diverted aircraft and continues to monitor and assess the situation. The Airport has robust protocols in place to manage the flow of aircraft while maintaining the safety of all incoming and departing flights.”

Burlington MP Karina Gould announced she has raised the final cash installment needed to stay in the Liberal leadership race. In a social media post Gould tweeted, “After three amazing weeks on the campaign trail, I’m happy to report that our campaign hit an exciting milestone this weekend— we paid the final portion of the Party’s $350,000 entry fee! A massive thank you to everyone who’s helped make that possible.” In an earlier tweet Gould had been critical of the party for setting the fundraising threshold at the $350,000.
It looks like all the other contenders will meet the deadline as well. The campaigns for Chrystia Freeland, Ruby Dhalla and Frank Baylis confirmed they have already made their final payment.
Perceived frontrunner Mark Carney’s campaign says he will pay the last instalment to the party today. The candidates are scheduled stage two debates early next week in Montreal, one in English and one in French. There are now just three weeks left in the race before the party names its next leader on March 9.
National polling shows the Federal Conservatives still ahead, but with a much smaller margin than they had held for most of the past year. A Mainstream poll released February 13 showed the Conservatives leading the Liberals by just three points 39-36. A poll by the same company four weeks ago had the conservative lead at 19 points.

Changes in administration of blue box program coming April 1

Beginning April 1, 2025, the Blue Box program in Hamilton, including curbside collection and supplying blue boxes to residents, will be managed by Circular Materials and not by the City of Hamilton. Between April 1 and December 31, 2025, there will be no changes to residents’ collection day or to the materials that can go into the blue box. Residents can continue using two blue boxes to separate paper and container recycling.
Residents can still use clear plastic bags for recycling, but this could change January 1, 2026.
After January 1, 2026, Circular Materials can make changes to what is accepted and how material is collected under the new program. They will also be responsible for informing residents of any changes.
The changes are necessary because the Ford government decreed that as of January 1, 2026, 100% of the cost and operating responsibility of the Blue Box Program to the producers of paper products and packaging.
The packaging industry have named Circular Materials Ontario (Circular Materials), to head up the new recycling regime. Circular Materials will hand out contracts to various waste haulers and in the case of Hamilton GFL has won the Hamilton contract. A city staff report says “this is advantageous to the City as it is Hamilton’s current curbside collection contractor.”
The city will continue to receive recyclables at its three Community Recycling Centres during the transition period.
In a recent interview, Angela Storey Director, Waste Management, told the Bay Observer, “Under the new system the material will go to a GFL facility for sorting and processing. It’s happening across the entire province and during the transition period residents shouldn’t see a change in their program, what we don’t know is how some of the basic customer service pieces will look like. For instance if somebody needs a blue box now, they can just go to a transfer station to pick one up. After April 2025 were no longer in that business, so there will be a customer service number or website for people to contact so that people will be able to get new blue boxes.”
