The Canadian Federation of Independent Business is urging all provincial governments to remove internal trade barriers restricting the movement of goods, services and labour right across the country.

U.S. President Donald Trump says his administration is still poised to impose 25 per cent tariffs on all Canadian goods bound for the United States starting March 4th.

The CFIB says it’s pleased to see so much attention being placed on the urgent need for open trade within Canada.

The CFIB’s senior policy analyst, SeoRhin Yoo says Canada’s premiers have all the tools at their disposal to allow goods and workers to move freely across the country, and making the necessary changes “shouldn’t be a drawn-out process.”

Municipal enforcement officers in Mount Pearl are working with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary to safely remove a dog from a home on Whitley Drive after an attack that left one person injured.

The City says officers were called to assist police Monday morning. The injured resident, along with others in the home, was able to leave safely and is receiving treatment in hospital. Officials say there is no risk to the public.

Efforts to remove the animal have been unsuccessful so far due to its aggressive behaviour. Municipal enforcement officers say they are working with police on a plan to safely resolve the situation.

RCMP in Bay St. George is asking for the public’s help in its investigation into an unusual incident in which a snowmobiler ended up in hospital with serious injuries.

RCMP were called about an injured snowmobiler around 4:30 Friday afternoon on Gravel’s Pond in Port au Port. The snowmobiler had reportedly fallen from his machine after it came to a stop and suffered serious injuries that police say do not appear to be consistent with the fall from the snowmobile.

The cause of the injury remains under investigation.

Police are asking for the public’s help as they continue their investigation. They are hoping to speak with anyone who travelled along the isthmus, an area commonly known as the gravels, in Port au Port between the hours of 3:57 and 4:05 on Friday, February 21st.

Drivers are also being asked to check for possible dash cam surveillance during that time.

Anyone with information is asked to contact RCMP.

The latest assessment of the hull of the cargo vessel Baltic III which ran aground at Lark Harbour just over a week ago, shows “significant breaches or holes” according to the Coast Guard.

Tank soundings have confirmed about 1.7 million litres of heavy fuel and marine gas oil on board the vessel, however, no pollution has been seen in the area.

Sea conditions hampered some operations over the weekend, including the ability to access the vessel safely.

The FFAW says its members will continue to ensure that the snow crab fishery remains healthy for years to come.

DFO released its snow crab stock assessment today, showing that while biomass levels are at the highest seen in decades, there are some areas of concern.

Snow crab is a cold-water species that thrives in a narrow range of temperatures, and variation in temperature can have a profound effect on production, early survival and recruitment.

DFO’s Julia Pantin says there is some variation between stocks in certain NAFO zones.

While fishing areas 3LNO – which comprises the area from Cape Freels to Cape St. Mary’s – and 3Ps on the south coast are in the Healthy Zone, more northern areas, including 3K on the northeast coast and 2HJ on the coast of Labrador, are in the cautious zone.

The FFAW’s Jason Spingle says stock advisory sessions are starting up this Thursday.

Newfoundland Power says there are several factors that are contributing to the higher bills this time of year.

Social media has been flooded with posts in recent weeks from frustrated customers who have seen a spike in their monthly bills without an increase in usage.

Director of Stakeholder Relations and Communications Glenda Power acknowledges that they have seen the posts and have received some calls directly from people concerned about their bills.

Power says weather is the most common factor when talking about electricity bills, noting that it can create higher usage without people realizing it.

For example, she says people can have their thermostat set to 20 degrees all year long, but in the colder months, the home has to work harder to maintain that temperature, thus creating increased usage.

Power says there was also a 7 per cent increase to Newfoundland Power rates last August.

She says that the increase might not have been as noticeable during the warmer months, but it was more pronounced during the colder winter.

Nova Scotia RCMP says investigators are confident that the deliberate cut of a Bell Aliant communications fibreoptic cable linking Cape Breton with the southwest coast of Newfoundland is not a National Security incident.

The cable was cut on Christmas Eve.

Bell Aliant says the cable, which is lying on the seabed, is not easy to sever and would have had to be lifted to the surface, and cutting tools used to make a clean cut.

It was the second such cable cut on the Cabot Strait in less than a year. A similar incident occurred in the same general area off the coast of Aspy Bay on January 4th of 2024.

The cost of repairs is estimated to be millions of dollars.

The investigation continues.

Another eight sexual violence charges have been laid against a man already accused of more than 70 such offences.

The new charges, involving a 12th complainant, were sworn today in provincial court against 64-year-old Tony Humby, bringing to 85 the total number of charges he’s now facing.

Among the new charges are procuring a person under the age of 18 and a householder permitting sexual activity.

Humby has pleaded not guilty with a 37-day trial still scheduled to start in provincial court next Monday, March 3rd. His co-accused, 82-year-old Bruce Escott, has pleaded guilty to seven charges and is set to be sentenced the next day.

It’s alleged the men worked together to recruit and abuse young, vulnerable male teens over the past 20 to 25 years.

The facts from Escott’s case detailed an ongoing scheme by both men to lure and sexually assault the victims at their east-end homes and in Escott’s taxi.

The Crown is seeking an 18-year sentence for Escott, which means he could be almost 100 years old by the time he’s released from custody.

Those charges include:
  • Sexual assault
  • Procuring a person under the age of 18
  • Householder permitting sexual activity
  • Making child pornography
  • Invitation to sexual touching
  • Sexual interference
  • Sexual exploitation
  • Trafficking a person under the age of 18

A sense of “gratitude” and “resilience” was present in the metro region recently as the Avalon branch of the Ukrainian National Federation marked the third anniversary of the Russian invasion.

Russia launched a full-scale invasion of the country on February 24th, 2022.

Bruce Lilly of UNF Avalon says there will be a “distribution of people” who want to return home, depending on their circumstances, once the war has finally concluded.

He says that will depend on the way in which war is ended. Lilly describes people “waiting with baited breath,” not to hear about what the discussions or headlines are day-to-day, “but what is in black-and-white at the end of the day.”

The Better Business Bureau confirms it has received a number of inquiries about a company by the name of Newfoundland Water Solutions.

The company is not accredited by the Better Business Bureau.

The BBB says the business profile for Newfoundland Water Solutions links to the business profile for Atlantic Environmental Systems Incorporated and has owners in common. The BBB says it has a “pattern of complaint” about the company alleging “high pressure sales tactics, particularly targeting senior citizens” and “making false claims about their quality of water.”

Atlantic Environmental Systems Inc caught the attention of officials in Nova Scotia where their sales permits were revoked following customer complaints about aggressive sales tactics.

Reports indicate that PEI also pulled the company’s license to operate in that province.

Service NL confirms that Newfoundland Water Solutions is registered in Newfoundland and Labrador, but they have not yet received any direct complaints regarding the company’s door-to-door sales.

Service NL does warn however, that people not feel pressured to sign sales agreements, and watch for warning signs that include an offer of a free gift if you buy a product, an offer that is only good that day, or a claim that a neighbor just made a purchase.

The MHA for Cartwright L’Anse au Clair says the government is working on a number of different angles to get help to clean up the debris left after a storm surge destroyed the local stage in Spotted Island.

A member of the Spotted Island Community Board on the southeast coast of Labrador says the equipment and belongings of numerous harvesters stored at the ten-unit stage now litter beaches and the sea bed after the structure was levelled by high seas in January.

Erin Snow of the local community board says they can’t seem to get any satisfaction from the province in terms of help with a clean-up effort.

“Not only did they lose sentimental value and treasures over the years, and mourning the loss of the stage as it is, but more importantly, we’re still waiting for the provincial government, federal government, anybody who can help fishermen in that area clean up (from) the natural disaster that occurred.” She says as of February 24th they still had not received a formal response from the provincial government.

Environment Minister and local MHA, Lisa Dempster says her office is working on a number of things.

He says the government is taking the situation seriously. She says affected property owners can apply for assistance through a Special Assistance Grant, a Disaster Financial Assistance program and “a couple of other things I have in the hopper as the Environment Minister.”

NL Health Services acknowledges that patients are frustrated but a number of major projects are underway that it hopes will address some of the lengthy wait times and crowding in capital city Emergency Rooms.

Calls and complaints about wait times in the ER are received almost daily in the VOCM Newsroom.  NL Health Services says its top priority is to provide safe and quality emergency care to patients arriving at ERs. Wait times vary, but patients who are assessed as non-urgent often have to wait 8 hours or more.

NL Health Services says the expansion of the Health Science emergency department is scheduled to be completed by 2027, while senior-friendly spaces are being created in new ERs.

Urgent care centres, which are expected to take some of the stress off Emergency Rooms, are expected to open later this year, while an ambulatory care centre in the old Costco building in St. John’s is also expected to open this year.

NLHS says recruitment efforts continue, and they are “steadily hiring” more registered nurses, including local graduates and internationally educated nurses.  NLHS also hired a new cardiologist who started working in the fall.

A post-mortem examination recently revealed that former Canadian hockey great, Bobby Hull suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy – a progressive degenerative brain disease affecting patients with repeated concussions and multiple traumatic brain injuries.

Hull, who was also known as The Golden Jet, was a Hall of Fame forward and two-time NHL MVP, helping the Chicago Blackhawks to Stanley Cup victory in 1961.

Hull passed away two years ago, and last week, it was confirmed that he suffered from CTE, a disease that has been diagnosed in former hockey and football players post-mortem.

The Chief at Mass General Brigham’s Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre, Dr. Daniel Daneshvar has authored the largest study on CTE to-date and found that the number and strength of head impacts, and not concussions, are the main driver of CTE.

He says players in high-impact sports are at greatest risk, but also those in the military.

“We’ve diagnosed CTE in a number of athletes, including in 17 of the first 18 former NHL players whose brains have been studied for analysis. So it’s those repeated hits to the head that likely caused his CTE.”

Dr. Daneshvar says improvements in safety equipment and a delay in hitting in younger players is helping to address the issue, but, because frequency is an issue, changes need to be brought in in high-level practice as well.

“70 per cent of head impacts occur in practices,” says Daneshvar, “so if we change the way we practice, we reduce 70 per cent of hits to the head, to make sure we protect our next generation of athletes.”

The Provincial Government will be leading a series of market development and expansion initiatives in the coming weeks.

The goal is to secure new trading partners that reduce reliance on the U.S. market for Newfoundland and Labrador businesses. The United States is currently Newfoundland and Labrador’s largest trading partner. The province says tariffs could put roughly 10,000-20,000 jobs in the province at risk.

There are a number of initiatives the province is taking to increase trade in the province.

Premier Furey will be in Toronto for the next meeting of the Committee on Internal Trade. Furey will lead a delegation at the Prospectors and Developments Association of Canada conference in Toronto.

Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance Siobhan Coady will travel to the United Kingdom to meet with senior government officials and business leaders to advance the business and investment trade relationship.

Minister of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture Gerry Byrne will travel to Boston to attend the largest seafood trade show in North America and meet with key customers of Newfoundland and Labrador seafood exports.

Furey will also travel to Japan with a focus on enhancing government-to-government relations, building on and promoting new opportunities in the energy and critical minerals sectors, and working to expand fisheries opportunities in the Asian market.

The minister responsible says 32 acres of land sold back to the family from which it was expropriated more than 40 years ago is “landlocked” and of no used to government, but the Opposition disagrees.

PC Leader Tony Wakeham believes Transportation Minister Fred Hutton is the “only one” in the province who thinks the land cannot be developed because it’s land locked.

The sale was discovered in a recent Order in Council.

The 32 acres, half of which is a protected wetland, was sold to Crosbie Group Limited for $176,000 or approximately $5,000 an acre. Crosbie Group is run by Tim Crosbie, the grandson of Bernard Parsons the man from whom the land was originally expropriated. The original purchase price when expropriated was about $25,000 an acre.

Wakeham told VOCM Open Line with Paddy Daly the land was sold at an 80 per cent mark down from the original purchase price with no accountability.

He says Crown land is an asset belonging to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador “and when you dispose of Crown land, as you are doing in this particular case, you don’t get to resell it again, unless you’re this Liberal government who sells it at one price and buys it back at a higher price” he says referencing the recent land deal involving land at Kenmount Crossing that was sold and bought back by government.

Parts of the island are in for a drenching as temperatures flip to the mild side tomorrow.

Environment Canada has a rainfall warning out for the south coast and southern Avalon, while a special weather statement has been issued for eastern Newfoundland as the system moves in tomorrow morning.

Meteorologist Rob Carroll says it’ll be coming down in buckets for areas under rainfall warning.

Warnings are out for Burin, Connaigre and the southern Avalon with hourly rates of 5 to 15 mm coming down with total amounts between 40 to 80 mm. Carroll says it’s a good idea for anyone in those areas to clear storm drains and gutters ahead of the soaking.

For the eastern portion of the island and other parts of the south coast, total amounts will be within the 20 to 50 mm range.

Parts of the west coast and the Northern Peninsula are in for more of a wintery mix as a rain/snow mixture will switch to snow and blowing snow later tomorrow afternoon.

Officers patrolled the area, but did not locate the suspect. A second report was received and officers then located the snowmobiler in question at the Esso in Cormack.

He was arrested and provided breath samples that police say were more than two and a half times the legal limit. His licence was suspended and he was released to appear in court at a later date.

Good Tuesday morning!

Post 1 – 5:49 AM NST (5:19 AM AST)

A weak disturbance will traverse the Province today. This will bring some light snow and flurries to Labrador, the West Coast, parts of the Southwest Coast, and interior Newfoundland. Outside of the mountains in western Newfoundland, less than 5 cm will fall in the areas that see snow today. The snow will end late this afternoon for the Island and a bit earlier in much of the Big Land.

Southern, central and eastern sections of the Island will see light snow mixed with rain or just light rain showers this afternoon, ending this evening.

Today’s highs for the island and southeast Labrador will be near or a few degrees above freezing. At the same time, a cold front will charge through northern and western Labrador, knocking temperatures back to the minus teens and 20s this afternoon and evening.

TODAY’S TEMPERATURE ANIMATION

This system moving through is just the appetizer for Wednesday’s weather, which will bring another winter storm to the region. This will bring heavy rain to eastern Newfoundland, heavy snow to western and southeast Labrador, and a mix of rain and snow through Central. Weather alerts are in effect ahead of this weather-maker.

The highlights from his system are as follows:

  • Rain and snow spread across the Island late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning
    • By Wednesday morning, rain or rain mixed with wet snow will be falling over much of the Island except the Great Northern Peninsula, where it will snow.
  • Snow also arrives in southeast Labrador on Wednesday morning
  • Rain will transition to heavy snow Wednesday afternoon over and near the West Coast
    • The rain/snow line will move eastward into Central by Wednesday evening, also changing the rain over to heavy snow
    • The snow ends for most areas Wednesday evening, including in the Straits of Labrador.
  • Areas along and east of the Bay d’Espoir Highway look to remain mostly rain, only ending as some snow late Wednesday.
    • The rain will fall heavily in this area on Wednesday afternoon and evening.
      • Rainfall rates of 10 mm/hr are possible
  • The weather improves on Wednesday night

More details to follow today!

An NDP petition launched to have Elon Musk’s Canadian citizenship revoked has garnered well over 193,000 signatures, with participation from right across the country.

Charlie Angus, the member for Timmins-James Bay, is petitioning the Prime Minister to revoke Musk’s dual citizenship status, and his Canadian passport immediately.

The petition cites Musk’s engagement in “activities that go against the national interest of Canada,” that he has “used his wealth and power to influence our elections,” and that he has “now become a member of a foreign government that is attempting to erase Canadian sovereignty.”

As of yesterday, the petition had received just over 2,200 signatures from this province.
