Today at St. Bernard’s Elementary, the Janeway Foundation celebrated the launch of the 41st Annual Janeway Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Telethon and the announcement of the 2025 Children’s Miracle Network Champions, Lyndon and Zander Andersen, twin boys from Bay Bulls. Funds raised at the Telethon, airing on NTV on Saturday and Sunday, June 7-8, will support new equipment and education grants, and facilitate research projects at the Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre.

This is the first year that siblings have been named CMN champions!

  • Born at 25 weeks, Lyndon and Zander Andersen each weighing barely a pound, faced immense health challenges. Tragically, their triplet brother, Billy, passed away shortly after birth. Lyndon spent 209 days in the NICU battling infections, blood clots, and fractures. He was later diagnosed with cerebral palsy and epilepsy, which causes daily seizures. Zander struggled with breathing issues and a heart condition called PDA.

Thanks to donor-funded care at the Janeway Children’s Hospital, Lyndon and Zander received lifesaving treatment. “We owe the lives of our boys to the Janeway,” says their mom, Adina. “They kept them safe and gave us hope.”

“This year’s fundraising will support priority needs in equipment, education, and research projects. In particular there is an emergent need for equipment and family-centred care initiatives in the Janeway’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Our province has the highest rate of medical complexity among children nationally, and the earlier and faster that state-of-the-art medical intervention can occur, the better the health outcomes can be for kids. Through donor support we are setting up our children for a healthier future,” said Rebecca Dutton, President and CEO, Janeway Children’s Hospital Foundation.

“The Janeway Foundation extends its gratitude to everyone who has supported its mission over the past four decades through its events and campaigns. As the Foundation looks to the future, it remains committed to enhancing pediatric care for the children of Newfoundland and Labrador.”

Joining the celebration today was Walmart, key sponsor of the CMN Champion Program, 2024 Champion John Bennett and family, Janeway Foundation Board Chair Gill Whelan, Board members, and supporters.

NTV’s Beth Penney is covering the story and will have more at 5:30 and 6.

John Hogan has officially thrown his name in the hat to become Liberal party leader.

Hogan made the announcement earlier today at the Hilton Hotel and Suites on Stavanger Drive.

Many supporters were in attendance, including several Liberal cabinet ministers and MHAs, as well as Hogan’s wife, daughter, and son.

In fact, because so many people showed up a collapsible wall dividing the space in half had to be taken down to make room.

Hogan says he has had a lot of discussions with his family over the last week, and acknowledges becoming premier would add an extra layer of business to his life, but he believes as a family they are ready to take it on.

He says family was his number one consideration in deciding to seek the leadership. He says he spoke with Premier Furey about how he handled it, and despite the intensity of the job he thinks they will be able to handle it.

Hogan joins John Abbott in the leadership race. Abbott revealed his plans earlier in the week.

A former town councilor in Stephenville is bemoaning the change in status at the local airport, which has been downgraded to a registered aerodrome as the privately-owned facility continues to struggle with significant financial woes.

The airport was sold to Carl Dymond in 2023 for $6.90, and an agreement to complete lighting upgrades at the facility at a cost of $1.7 million, under what he called the Dymond Group of Companies.

Dymond’s ambitions to develop the asset have not come to fruition, and the final insult to residents came last month with the town council’s decision to agree to a request to plow the runways at the facility.

Lenny Tiller had been a vocal critic of the deal to sell the airport to Carl Dymond and raised numerous questions about the process. He resigned from council last year citing a toxic environment. He says the airport is now in the same category as the airstrips on Bell Island and Clarenville and it should never have happened.

He believes some on council played on the hopes and dreams of future prosperity for the town to get re-elected, and Dymond was “used as a pawn” to that end.

Tiller says he intends to run for council in the fall.

Acting health minister John Haggie has written a letter to Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services asking them to evaluate procurement contracts they have with companies in the United States.

PC Health Critic Barry Petten first raised the issue in the House of Assembly yesterday, asking what contracts with US-based companies have been replaced with Canadian vendors.

While NLHS is looking at the situation, Haggie does not know how rapidly they can move away from some companies given that they may produce highly-specialized health care products.

Petten also wants government to have a look at their contract with Teladoc, which is worth about $11-million annually, which he argues has American doctors doing work here.

Haggie states they can look at the Teladoc, but counters Petten’s point by saying there are Canadian doctors that work for the company.

He says he wouldn’t want to get in the way of Newfoundland or Canadian physicians providing service through that company.

All of the uncertainty surrounding tariff threats may have some investors feeling jittery, but a local financial adviser says the first step is to ensure your asset allocation is right to weather the storm.

Larry Short of Short Financial, a branch of iA Private Wealth says for those concerned about their pensions or long-term investments, the first step is to call your financial adviser to better understand how much of your money is invested in the stock market vs bonds.

He says interest rates tend to drop in turbulent times, which then boosts the value of bonds.

“If you have 50 per cent of your money in stocks, and 50 percent in bonds, the portion that is in bonds have actually increased over the last period of time. And if these tariffs continue, it is more than likely that we’ll get the Bank of Canada cutting interest rates even more, which would cause those bonds to go higher.”

He says when interest rates rise, stocks tend to do better.

A group of protesters gathered at Carbonear Collegiate yesterday to express their opposition to policies imposed in the school to keep the washrooms “safe and clean.”

The school administration has assigned staff to monitor areas outside the washrooms at the school in response to reported bullying, vaping and vandalism.

Protesters claim the measures go too far.

RCMP were called to the school, and asked the protesters to move their rally to the parking lot, which they did.

NL Schools says it is aware of the situation and if a staff member feels there is a need to enter the washroom, then it is done in a manner that respects the privacy and dignity of students.

In the meantime, NL Schools is encouraging the school community to engage with school staff in “appropriate” ways so that “administration can constructively address issues or concerns.” Under provincial legislation, schools are not public spaces and are not accessible without express or implied permission.

The Department says the Access to Health and Education Services Act, introduced during the pandemic, is also in place to prohibit interference and intimidation in or near health and educational facilities.

A fire in the centre of St. John’s late Wednesday evening has displaced five people from their home.

At about 9:30 p.m. firefighters responded to a home on University Avenue, and when crews arrived they found smoke coming from the front and from the eaves of a two-unit home. All three people who were in an upstairs apartment escaped unharmed. Firefighters alerted both downstairs tenants to the fire, allowing them to also escape.

Crews were able to quickly knock down the fire, which caused extensive damage to the kitchen area of the upstairs unit. There was smoke and water damage throughout the home. Personnel with Newfoundland Power were called to disconnect power to the home.

While there were no injuries, all five residents of the home have been displaced. The Canadian Red Cross was called to assist them.

A man with one of the most distinctive voices in broadcasting and who called the shots at the VOCM Radio Network for more than 25 years, has passed away.

John Murphy, who served as the general manager at VOCM starting in the 1970’s through to 2010, began his career at CKCM in Grand Falls in 1963, a time long before social media, computers and automation. Quick witted, and of eloquent tongue, “Murph” as he was known to many in the industry, loved radio and all the things it encompassed.

Probably his proudest moment was being inducted into the Newfoundland and Labrador Hockey Hall of Fame as he called many a game over the airwaves, especially in central Newfoundland but also at the Allan Cup level as well.

He took the helm at VOCM at a time when rival CJON was number one in the ratings and as VOCM languished in the number two spot. Within a few years, VOCM catapulted to number one, an accomplishment of which he was incredibly proud.

Murphy retired from radio, after 50 years, in 2013.

Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date. John Murphy was 83.
