The driver of a car involved in a single-vehicle crash in the west end of St. John’s on Sunday evening was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Emergency crews were called to a portion of Robert E. Howlett Memorial Drive at about 8:00 p.m.. When they arrived on the scene they found a sedan resting in a field several metres from the roadway. The car, which had been traveling eastbound, left the roadway and flipped over at least once in a field. The car came to rest on its wheels, having sustained significant damage.

The driver of the vehicle, who was the only occupant, was removed from the car by firefighters and taken to a waiting ambulance. Paramedics took the individual to hospital with what were described as serious injuries.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) closed a portion of the road, between Ruby Line and Heavy Tree Road, for several hours to facilitate their investigation into the cause of the crash. That investigation is ongoing.

NL Health Services has been chosen by the Mental Health Commission of Canada as a demonstration site for a project designed to enhance mental health care across the country.

Dr. Timothy Hierlihy, the physician lead for the project at NL Health Services, says they were one of four successful applicants—the others being in Ontario, Manitoba and British Columbia.

He expects that the undertaking will impact patient care in a number of different ways including ensuring that they are doing what they think they are doing. The project has a tailor-made approach for measuring the implementation of all the standards, which will then be applied province-wide.

The funding also means that NL Health Services clinicians will be provided with training on cognitive behavioral therapy for psychosis as well as family intervention therapy.

An alternative arts organization is hitting the west coast once again.

Lawnya Vawnya are bringing back their Get Out of Town Concert Series to Corner Brook, which sees music acts and artists typically programmed in their spring festival travel to areas outside of St. John’s.

The organization, which primarily programs independent alternative music events, are bringing country-rock group Andrew Smith Band, alt-rock band Bus People, punk band Sick Puppy and techno artist DJ Spittle to the west coast city.

Sarah Harris, program coordinator with Lawnya Vawnya, says its important for them to go beyond St. John’s.

She says there are people with diverse interests in every community in Newfoundland and Labrador, so they want to reach out and find the heart of that. She says its fun and important to stoke that side of culture.

The series will hit the Marble Mountain Knotty Pine Lodge on the evening of March 1 and the afternoon of March 2 for an all-ages, free show before moving to Bootleg Brewing Company on the evening of March 2 for a 19+ show.

Operations coordinator Libby Dane says they try to reach as many young people as they can, and want their events to be accessible to anyone.

She says its cool to see young people getting inspired by these artists and discovering what they can do in their own communities across the province.

More destinations will be added to the Get Out of Town Concert Series in the near future. Updates can be found at lawnyavawnya.com.

The Home Again Furniture Bank has officially launched its annual Heads Without Beds community fundraiser.

The furniture bank helps provide and deliver furniture, such as beds, to those in need.

The annual event, which is taking place on March 22, will see people voluntarily give up their beds for a night to raise awareness of the issue, and raise funds for the organization. The goal, this year is $50,000.

In 2023, Home Again says they saw a 24 per cent increase in requests for furniture and helped to furnish over 600 homes.

With challenges regarding the cost of living, they expect those levels to either be maintained or exceeded this year.

Health Minster Tom Osborne says the tens of millions paid for private agency nurses is a concern, but isn’t news.

Osborne says it’s no secret travel nurses are expensive—to the tune of almost $36 million for several months in 2022, versus the previous average of $1 million.

But he does want answers regarding $1.6 million billed for meals reportedly not part of the contract, according to the Globe and Mail.

Osborne also reiterated that travel nurses are a “necessary evil” to keep services from shutting down.

But it’s the extras such as furniture, cable bills paid, and even an air fryer that have many, including the nurses union and Official Opposition, questioning the spending.

Osborne says recruitment continues to be a priority, but the need for agency nurses is undisputable.

“Without it, we would’ve had more closures of emergency departments, more services on diversion,” he said. “So we absolutely, 100 per cent needed agency nursing. The cost is a concern for me. It’s a concern for (NL Health Services CEO) Dave Diamond, it’s a concern for the premier, it’s a concern for every premier and health minister in Canada, and that is what we’re grappling with.”

There have been calls for the auditor general to step in and review the spending on travel nurses.

Osborne says he’ll address that issue once he receives an explanation from NL Health Services on the finer details of the agency nursing contract.

Government officials say there was “nothing unusual” about the time it took to process the first ride-sharing licence in the province — a licence that was suspended just two days after it was approved.

RedSea Riding got the green light on Jan. 17, with a news conference set to announce it that Friday, on the 19th.

But that was abruptly cancelled with officials telling media that Service NL Minister Sarah Stoodley was tied up in a cabinet meeting.

It wasn’t until the following Monday that VOCM first reported that Redsea Riding’s CEO, Yosief Tesfamichael, was facing a list of sex-related charges against minors.

That revelation led government to confirm Redsea’s licence had been suspended indefinitely due to “new information received.”

The Telegram has since reported it took just over a day to approve the application, which reportedly included standards copied from other ride-sharing companies.

But in a statement to VOCM, a spokesperson for the minister states “there was nothing unusual about the processing time in reviewing the application from Redsea Riding.”

“The service standard for all commercial motor registration transactions is two business days from receipt of a completed application,” read the statement. “However, like anything, there may be occasions when officials can process applications faster, and others when it may take longer.”

They go on to say the application met established criteria, noting policies here are very similar to those in other jurisdictions.

The spokesperson declined to provide more details, citing Tesfamichael’s ongoing criminal case.

The 43-year-old, originally from the African country of Eritrea, is facing five counts, including sexual assault, sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching, unlawfully making sexually explicit material available to a child and exposing his genitals.

The offences are alleged to have occurred between August of 2013 and May of 2021.

The matter will be called in Supreme Court on Monday morning for a case management meeting that can’t be reported on.

That’s in advance of the trial which is scheduled for October.

There’s a summit next week on the future of Labrador West.

The event is being held to discuss the issues and challenges facing the mining region, which is only about 23 km from Quebec.

Labrador City Mayor Belinda Adams says all three political parties are committed to attend.

One of the issues they face is the lack of accommodations for seniors as it costs about 40 per cent more build such facilities in Lab West than it would on the island.

She says years ago many were afraid to come to a mining town to develop because it is high risk. But at some point, risks need to be taken to grow Labrador West.

Premier Andrews Furey will deliver the keynote address on Monday at 12:00 noon at the Wabush Hotel, while ministers Lisa Dempster, Paul Pike and Andrew Parsons are also scheduled to speak.

Today marks the second anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine – a war that’s claimed thousands of lives.

Newfoundland and Labrador threw open its doors to residents and families fleeing Ukraine and now has a Ukrainian community numbering in the thousands.

Sofia Dubyk says the invasion has had a devastating impact on her native Ukraine and a service at the Basilica of St. John the Baptist will today remember those lost.

She calls it a time of remembrance and an opportunity to come together.

The service will take place this afternoon from 2:00 to 2:45 at the Basilica.

Prime Minister Trudeau Reflects on Anniversary

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Russian President Vladimir Putin unleashed “unspeakable violence and brutality that has left hundreds of thousands dead and forced millions to flee.”

He says Putin’s invasion of Ukraine is not only a violation of the country’s sovereignty and independence, but also of the basic principles of the rules-based international order.

He calls it “an assault on our common humanity; and an attack against freedom, democracy, and peace.

Prime Minister Trudeau says despite Russia’s unrelenting attacks, “Ukraine continues to demonstrate unwavering courage.”

Trudeau is in Kyiv today to mark the anniversary.

Last month inflation in Canada was at 2.9 per cent, a decrease from 3.4 per cent in December.

The cost of food purchased from stores increased by 3.4 per cent, compared with December when prices increased 4.7 per cent. This resulted in downward pressure on the all-items. Grocery prices remain elevated.

Lower prices for airfares and travel tours also contributed to the decline.

Canadians paid more for cellular services last month compared with December.
