The two leaders exchanged expressions of mutual respect and appreciation as they committed to work together toward shared goals.

Friends and family of a woman who was struck by a vehicle while in a crosswalk in St. John’s are raising money for her as she learns how to walk again.

Melissa Ralph was walking home from work on February 20 when an SUV slammed into her, breaking her pelvis in three places and leaving her shrieking in pain.

She has had two major surgeries, resulting in plates and pins being inserted.

Samantha Borskey, who is driving the GoFundMe campaign, says Melissa will have a long and painful recovery, lasting months. She will not be able to work and will have many needs including medical equipment, transportation to and from medical appointments, and a dog walker for her pet, just to name a few.

It will be weeks before she can put any weight at all on her leg, so she won’t be able to start physio, which essentially will be learning to walk again, until she sees some improvement.

Melissa thanks everyone who has helped her through what is an incredibly challenging journey.

One of newly-minted Prime Minister Mark Carney’s first acts was to drop the hated Carbon Tax, but consumers won’t see the benefit at the pumps for another couple of weeks.

The change won’t take effect until April 1st, when nearly 17 cents will come off the price of a litre of gas, and 21 cents will come off the price of a litre of diesel.

The change also means that carbon tax rebate cheques will stop being delivered, after the next payment at the beginning of April.

Memorial University is staring down a nearly a $9-million deficit in their upcoming budget, according to an update recently posted to the MUN Gazette.

During a Board of Regents meeting held on March 6th, it was revealed that the budget forecast includes an $8.9-million shortfall against budgeted tuition and student-related fee revenue.

The update includes actual revenues and expenditures up to December 31st 2024, and forecasted revenues and expenditures up to March 31st of this year.

To address the shortfall, the University says they will be using a combination of one-time savings and carryover funds to achieve a balanced budget. At the meeting, the board also reviewed a preliminary 2025-2026 operating budget. While there are still “many unknowns” – including the amount of funding from the province, it is expected that, without any change, the university “will spend more money than it will bring in.”

They say both a budget model working group and a student recruitment committee have been formed to bolster enrollment for the upcoming academic year.

At the meeting, the board also approved “refinements” to their limited hiring program, which will be reviewed in July.

Fisheries Minister Gerry Byrne has invited the Atlantic Salmon Federation to sign a joint declaration on salmon conservation.

The provincial government says the Federation has stated publicly that they would welcome working with them regarding what they’re calling Ottawa’s “lack of commitment to wild salmon stock management” in the province. The declaration states that 75 per cent of all wild Atlantic salmon originating from North American river systems are Indigenous to the province and that Newfoundland and Labrador “bears an immensely disproportionate foundation for the future of all of North America’s wild Atlantic Salmon.”

It also calls on DFO to reverse its decision to allocate “disproportionately high resources” to areas with a low level of production and recruitment of the species and for a realignment of funding and salmon conservation resources to better reflect this province’s position.

Options are now being considered for the removal of fuel and cargo from the Baltic III, which has been grounded at Lark Harbour for more than a month.

Salvage crews, overseen by the Canadian Coast Guard, are looking at a number of possibilities, including the use of a tug and barge with portable tanks and possible ground transportation to remove the fuel.

Upgrades and extensions to the existing road will be needed to avoid having to rely on sea-based removal operations.

Photo via Facebook

T and T Salvage is now bringing in the necessary equipment to heat and remove the heavy oil from the fuel tanks, and shipboard cranes are operational and ready to go to offload the remaining cargo.

The Coast Guard says it is aware of the concerns of local lobster harvesters worried about increased marine traffic in the area, and they’re looking at options to lessen the impact, including the installation of floating docks for Coast Guard vessels to reduce congestion.

The opposition is baffled as to why the provincial government did not include people over 70 in accessing free vaccination for shingles.

Out of nowhere, government brought in a free vaccination program for those 65-70, but anyone over 70 still has to pay unless they are immunocompromised.

Health Critic Barry Petten says his party is committed to full coverage, and that’s what forced the Liberals’ hand to even provide minimal coverage.

Petten says the PC Party would cover all people 65 and over, and everyone who has a compromised immune system.

Petten, the MHA for Conception Bay South, says he has gotten a lot of calls from people who can’t understand why the exclusion.

“They can’t make sense of it—if you’re 69 and in good health, you’re covered; if you’re 71 and in good health, you’re not covered.”

It’s a new era for snowbirds who visit the United States for any length of time. An Executive Order signed by Donald Trump means that Canadians wintering down south have to register if they stay more than 30 days.

That’s not going over well. Even though the law has been on the books for years, it was never enforced. Now, people will have to show proof of registration if asked to do so.

Anthony Quinn, chief operating officer at the Canadian Association of Retired Persons, says the U.S. is really focused on the southern border but Canadians are getting caught up in the crackdown.

He says the whole thing is unnecessary and hurts the relationship between Canadians and Americans.

“Our members are telling us it’s another reason not to go, and they’re changing their plans,” says Quinn.

St. John’s International Faces Backlash Over Tweet Promoting Route to Tampa

St. John’s International Airport has apologized after a post on X promoting the resumption of direct service to Tampa, Florida drew the ire of many over the weekend.

WestJet resumed direct service from YYT to the sunshine state yesterday, which was highlighted in a post made by the airport.

It didn’t take long for users to criticize the post given the current political and economic tensions between Canada and the United States and the decision by some Canadians to avoid any travel south of the border.
The post was removed early yesterday afternoon with St. John’s International issuing an apology saying the situation was not considered when the post was made and the airport supports consumer choice.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning poultry farmers across the country to be extra vigilant this week.

It all comes as a farm in this province is the latest to be hit with the highly contagious avian influenza.

The CFIA says avian influenza is not a food safety concern but notes farmers should undertake enhanced biosecurity procedures.

They say those who do have chickens should asses their manure disposal programs, enhance measures for carcass removal and regularly clean facilities and vehicles by using a disinfectant.

Some of the signs of the bird flu include:

– lack of energy, movement or appetite
– decreased egg production
– swelling around the head, neck and eyes
– coughing, gasping for air or sneezing
– nervous signs, tremors or lack of coordination
– diarrhea
– sudden death

As of late February, nearly 15 million chickens across the country were hit with the contagious disease, with almost 400 of them from this province deriving from a non-commercial farm.

Now, a commercial farm has been hit in CBS.

A 100-million dollar push has been started in the U.S. to find vaccines for the sick birds, but there’s no word on if or when they could be available in Canada.

Despite the current political tensions between this country and the United States, the former chair of Hospitality NL says there is still a huge demand for a direct flight connecting St. John’s to the eastern U.S.

Deborah Bourden was succeeded by John Devereaux during the organization’s conference and trade show held in St. John’s last week.

Bourden says tension over tariffs has not had an impact on the number of bookings coming from American tourists.

While some Canadians are choosing to opt for vacation destinations outside the U.S., Bourden says there is still a need to reestablish a direct connection between the eastern United States and St. John’s—something that hasn’t been offered since the vapour trail between YYT and Newark last ran in 2015.

Bourden says while the main tourism markets are within Canada, the province is advertised along the eastern seaboard and there is a need to make it easily accessible.

She says direct connections are available to Halifax, and getting a direct route to St. John’s remains a top priority.

The Public Utilities Board is making a number of changes related to the pricing of petroleum products in Labrador.

For western Labrador, weekly maximum price adjustments will be done on Friday rather than Thursday, and a new blend schedule will be implemented for diesel beginning in the fall. The P.U.B. is also making some changes in the Labrador zone configuration.

Wholesale markups will be increased in most of Labrador to align with island markups, and retail markups for gasoline, diesel and stove oil will be increased to reflect increases in costs since the differentials were last adjusted.

The increases generally, will be kept to a maximum of one cent per week for the first five weeks to reduce impact.

The board will do annual reviews of the markups and zone differentials starting next year.

The provincial fisheries minister says he’s hoping the new federal fisheries minister will better collaborate with other governments.

St. John’s MP Joanne Thompson became the new minister of fisheries and oceans on Friday, the first time a Newfoundland and Labrador MP has held the job since Conservative Loyola Hearn from 2006-2008.

Provincial minister Gerry Byrne says Thompson needs to work with the province on joint management and support for harvesters for the future.

Byrne has been highly critical of the previous minister, Diane Lebouthillier, who clashed heads on redfish, cod, and snow crab.

A St. John’s woman is $2,500 richer this morning.

Dianne Foote won yesterday’s VOCM Mad Dash for the Cash.

Foote scrambled at the Avalon Mall to collect as much mall money as she could, scraping together just over $2,039, only to be topped up by the Avalon Mall.

With a fist full of Avalon Mall money in her hands, she said the cash couldn’t have come at a better time.

“As regards to my personal life, it means a whole lot. We’ve got sickness in our family and this adds so much, even if it was a thousand, it adds so much to my life right now,” she said.
