Students from St. Stephen and Milltown are partnering up to bring a multicultural fair to the community.

Teacher Catriona McLanaghan has been helping coordinate the event, which is scheduled for Jan. 23 at St. Stephen Elementary.

“Because we’ve had so many newcomer families move into the district,” she said in an interview with The Courier. “It is one of the ideas that we had to celebrate diversity in our community and build relationships.”

The event will feature different tables from different countries featuring displays and information, cultural dances, and instruction on different languages, among other activities.

McLanaghan said each child will get a little passport which they can get stamps to show what places they visited during the event.

She said sometimes it can be challenging to introduce yourself or ask questions about someone else and their culture, but this will open the lines of communication between students and their families.

“It’s just this nice, friendly, welcoming and an easy way to start conversations and they realize, like, oh yes, you’re just like me, but you’re from a different place,” she said.

Some cultural associations will be joining the small fair, she said, including the Chinese Cultural Association of New Brunswick,  and the Nigerian Cultural Association of New Brunswick, and McLanaghan said she is awaiting a response for some others as well.

One student, she explained, has spent time hand-sowing his Croatian traditional clothing for a dance he intends to perform during the fair.

It is in its first year, but she is hoping this will become something that increases in size in the years to come.

“It’s a way for people to build bridges, come in, have conversations with different people, and learn about where people come from,” she said.

Anyone who wishes to participate in the cultural fair should reach out to McLanaghan through her email: [email protected].

The fair is on Jan. 23 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at St. Stephen Elementary and is open to the public.

Online urgent care is available for residents in Southwestern Ontario. Appointment costs are fully covered with an Ontario health card.

In February 2021, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, London Health Sciences Centre and Hamilton Health Sciences Centre partnered together to offer virtual urgent care services through www.urgentcareontario.ca. We offer urgent online medical care services to adults, children and residents of long-term care across Southwestern Ontario.

  • Children’s Hospital, London Health Sciences Centre – provides virtual urgent care for children/youth
  • Hamilton Health Sciences – provides virtual acute care consultations for long-term residents (currently Hamilton and Niagara North West)
  • St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton – provides virtual urgent care for adults in Southwestern Ontario

The www.urgentcareontario.ca initiative received provincial funding to enhance the pandemic response through appropriate virtual care options, which are key in ensuring continuity of health services while preventing the spread of COVID-19.

A virtual urgent care appointment may be right for you if you or a loved one have a medical issue that is NOT life threatening, but requires urgent medical attention. The www.urgentcareontario.ca services are only for individuals that have an urgent medical issue but cannot see their family doctor due to availability or they do not have a family doctor.

We inform all patients that their first point of contact should always be their family doctor if they have one and they are available. We know family doctors are the most familiar with the personal and medical history of their patients, and often have a lengthy relationship with them. Patients seen through www.urgentcareontario.ca are told to follow up with their family doctor if necessary.

For any adults who see an www.urgentcareontario.ca, the assessment notes from the visit are shared with the patient’s family physician through fax within 24 hours.

Health care services and/or community supports for patients in the Windsor-Essex Area (including Leamington, Lakeshore, LaSalle, Kingsville, Amherstburg, Tecumseh, Pelee) are available through Windsor Essex Ontario Health Team.

If you are in severe distress, call 911 and do not drive yourself to the hospital. If you’re having a medical emergency or your symptoms worsen while you’re waiting for a virtual appointment, visit your nearest emergency department or urgent care centre in person.

Please see our FAQ page for more information about our services.

UrgentCareOntario.ca is made possible through the guidance and continued support of Ontario Health.

UPDATE (1/10, 9:13 a.m. ET): Metallica have now released single-day tickets for select shows on the tour, including their pair of April concerts at Toronto's Rogers Centre. Fifth Members will have first access starting January 13 at 9 a.m. local time and can request a pre-sale code here, while general on sale follows next Friday (January 17) at 10 a.m. local.

Tickets go on sale to the general public on September 26 at 10 a.m. local time.

Back in 2023, guitarist Kirk Hammett suggested that Metallica wouldn't play Toronto for at least three years — a prediction that thankfully hasn't come true.

Despite the heroic efforts of the Norris Point and Rocky Harbour fire departments, a home on Hospital Lane in the west coast community was a total loss.

The fire broke out on Wednesday, consuming the home, and leaving the affected family with nothing.

Firefighters were on the scene for an extended period trying to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby homes and vehicles.

The fire is not believed to be suspicious in nature.

Bonne Bay Search and Rescue assisted the fire department by deploying a drone to check for hot spots

The Fire Department is asking area residents to use caution while accessing Hospital Lane over the next few days.

RCMP in St. George is asking for the public’s help in identifying an individual following an incident in Upper Letang.

According to police, while fuelling up at a business on Main Street in Upper Letang on Jan. 7 around 11:15 a.m., a man made a gesture toward the owner that led the owner to believe the person was armed.

“The owner immediately returned inside the business, and the individual fled the scene without paying,” the release from the RCMP said.

Police said the man was described as in his 30s, wearing a black hoodie, black pants, and brown footwear at the time of the incident. The vehicle being driven is also described as a dark-colored pickup truck with noticeable body damage.

Anyone with information about the incident, or who has dash cam or security footage from the area at the time of the incident, is asked to contact the St. George RCMP at 506-755-1130.

To remain anonymous, information could be provided to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

For some people interviews are simple and they can ace interviews with ease. But, for most of us, interviews can be nerve-wracking, and you need a strategy to organize your answers based on the interview you are attending.

When attending an interview, it is important to understand the company, the job posting in its entirety, and whom you will be meeting with. There are a few ways you can approach this to have a good performance during your interview. Another point is to always understand your values when you are going to an interview. Understanding what you are looking for in life both personally and professionally will help to guide you in interviews and during your job search.

Understanding the company – First, you want to understand the company beyond the job posting. Most well-written job postings will have information about the company. However, this isn’t always the case. It is important to research the company on their website. Go to their career page and see what they offer as a company culture. Also, read some reviews of the company on websites like GlassDoor and Indeed to gain more insight into what it is like to work there. See if the company offers training and professional development, these can be great perks that can help you grow personally and professionally. The main point is to understand the company and its culture to see how it fits with your values and needs as a professional. Asking who will be interviewing you is important. Don’t be afraid to ask who you will be meeting with during the interview.

Understanding the roleKnowing the role you are applying to and remembering it is important. It should go without saying, however, in all my years working as a recruiter I have had many candidates say they applied for various roles and that they don’t remember submitting their application. For a recruiter or hiring manager, this is a big red flag. Employers expect job seekers to be organized and strategic in their search for a job.

Know the role:

  1. Understand why you are applying for the job and how you can benefit the company.
  2. Know what is expected of you in this role and know what skills and experience you have that will be of benefit and help you to perform well in the role.
  3. Know how to explain yourself in the role in the interview. Do this by having scenarios already thought about and connecting them back to the job description. Have solid stories and not just blanket statements about why you would be good in the role.
  4. Research common industry interview questions and come up with your answers before you go to the interview. This will help you to feel confident and prepared. It is much like preparing for a test.

Being prepared for the interview by following some of these guidelines will help you to increase confidence and performance.

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. hiring picked up unexpectedly in December as employers added 256,000 jobs, another sign of the economy’s resilience in the face of high interest rates.

The Labor Department reported Friday that job growth was up last month from 212,000 in November.

Getting a clear view of the U.S. job market hasn’t been easy the past few months.

Hurricanes and a big strike at Boeing threw off the October jobs numbers, pushing them down and setting up a payback rebound in November that likely exaggerated the strength of hiring.

The December jobs numbers delivered a clearer reading of where things stand.

Over the past few years, the economy and the job market have shown surprising resilience. Responding to inflation that hit a four-decade high two and a half years ago, the Fed raised its benchmark interest rate – the fed funds rate — 11 times in 2022 and 2023, taking it to the highest level in more than two decades.

The higher borrowing costs were widely expected to cause a recession but didn’t. Companies kept hiring, consumers kept spending, and the economy kept rolling along. In fact, U.S. gross domestic product – the nation’s output of goods and services — has expanded at a robust annual pace of 3% or more in four of the last five quarters.

American workers enjoy unusual job security. Layoffs are running below the pre-pandemic trend. On Thursday, the Labor Department reported that just 211,000 people applied for unemployment benefits last week, the fewest in nearly a year.

Inflation has come down, too, from a peak of 9.1% in June 2022 to 2.7% in November. The drop in year-over-year price increases gave the Fed enough confidence to cut rates three times in the last four months of 2024.

But Fed officials signaled at their December meeting that they planned to be more cautious about rate cuts this year. They now project just two rate reductions in 2025, down from the four they envisioned back in September. Progress against inflation has stalled in recent months, and it remains stuck above the Fed’s 2% target.

Friday’s job report is expected to show that average hourly wages rose 0.3% last month from November and 4% from December 2023, according to the FactSet survey. The Fed sometimes frets that wage gains will fuel inflation as companies try to pass along higher labor costs to customers by raising prices.

But Nancy Vanden Houten, lead U.S. economist at Oxford Economics, said in a commentary that current wage growth is consistent with the Fed’s inflation goals. That is partly because strong gains in U.S. productivity allow companies to pay their workers more and earn fatter profits without having to raise prices. “Earnings growth won’t give the Fed any headaches,” Vanden Houten wrote.
